Virginia to Florida - Has anyone ever taken the "scenic" route?

I'm planning on driving to Florida alone the end of December or beginning of January.. I'm in upstate NY and I'll take the major roads as far as VA, but then I was thinking about taking the scenic route (along the coast) the rest of the way.. I'm in no hurry (I'll be down there for 3 months) and it kills me to think that if I take 95 I'm going to be zipping thorugh all of those great states in the south without really seeing much of anything..

So - has anyone here ever done that?

A few years ago, we returned to our home in Maryland via several beach stop-offs. We took a week to drive back, stopping overnight at various resorts along the way. We were looking to see if we could find a beach destination that we would enjoy as much as the Outer Banks, where my family has been visiting since my grandfather's posting there during WWII. We had a great time, but decided that Cape Hatteras would continue to be our 1st choice for a week or two at the beach!
