Virgin America into LAX or Alaska Airlines into Orange County (from SEA)?

Actually I was talking about dinner (not snack) flights and none of it was free. In one case they only had enough for 1/3 and in the next case they had enough for about 1/2. They didn't have snacks or anything else for the 100+ kids and adults that simply had to go without.
With an incredulous tone, the stewardess told me they're not going to take a chance at having to throw away meals.

We've done this flight a few times and this has NEVER been our experience. I think you got a bad crew.

Right on, I was kinda replying to you and the previous poster an once without using multi-quote. If they run out of the cheese and fruit tray DS18 may storm the galley! We are spoiled because I will sometimes splurge for Main Cabin Select on Virgin America - where you get unlimited free food and movies. I think my kids ordered one of everything last flight.

I'm sure we'll be fine :)

When I checked in for our flight down on the 17th I had the option of pre ordering the cheese plate. I didn't do this but I could have. :)

Unlimited movies and unlimited food for a 2 1/2 hour trip seems a little odd.

No one is asking for those things, they just want to know what to expect. :).

VA has free movies. You can order food (for purchase) from your seat instead of waiting for the food service. It makes a flight very nice.

Depending on the timing of the flight, food is important. I had my dinner on the plane, the tapas box. DH and DS had bagel sandwiches because we were there early enough to do that. And they also had tapas and cheese boxes (both didn't have both, one ordered one and the other ordered the other). It was dinner.

If you check in within 24 hours of an Alaska flight you can upgrade to the front seats for $50 which includes larger seats, free luggage, food and drinks.

This does NOT always happen. It wasn't even offered to me, and I've never gotten that offered for that price.

If i had to pick between those two options then i would definitely pick AA into SNA. Your transfer to the hotel will be cheaper, faster, and easier since it is such a small airport and closer then lax. If i could offer two more options; when flying out of SEA we have always flown jetblue into long beach. The prices have always been the cheapest when compared to the other airlines, and just like sna, the long beach airport is small and close to disneyland making it easy with cheap transfer to the hotels. In November southwest offered direct flights to sna for the first time and it was a great deal especially with their free baggage policy, we were very happy with our flight.

It doesn't always happen because there needs to be a seat available. I believe it is that price for flights under 1,000 miles or something of that nature. I used it for a flight from belllingham to vegas. It is a decent option even just for the luggage, but again only available if the seat is available.

We prefer Jet Blue and flying Sea-LGB and the rental car situation at the Long Beach airport is awesome! I think it might be 15 steps from the baggage carousels to the car rental places and parking lot!!

Otherwise, I would fly Alaska and into SNA....it would have to be a huge cost difference to get me to fly into LAX and do that drive.

Agree completely. Leaving in ten days using the route. Last year was my first time in LGB. I didn't realize that when we got off the plane in LGB that we didn't even have to go inside. Just walked to get my luggage and straight to the cab.

It is a tough choice. When I am traveling with my son (special needs adult who has a Convaid chair for trips to Disney) I try to always book into SNA. The rental car situation is just SO much easier, and of course the drive is shorter to the resort. (the drive does not really bother me from LAX, traffic here in NY/NJ/PHL area is similar). I just hate taking shuttles to and from the rental car place and the airport. It is so hard for me with DS and the luggage and the chair.

When traveling alone, I have used Virgin or JetBlue into LAX, and loved it. Next week I am taking SouthWest EWR to SNA, (with layovers).

I generally prefer flying into SNA if at all possible. Alaska is solid, and we just flew Southwest which wasn't bad, either. Southwest was testing free streaming of TV on mobile devices, and if you can get one of the newer Alaska planes with the charging stations and wifi, it's great (and it tells you on the site when you buy tickets).

I really like VA, but I'd take the closeness of SNA any day!

I'll chime in here. I fly Alaska a lot in business. Great airline, and they're my go-to. (Also the only airline with direct flights to Orlando from Seattle!)

That said, if you want/need a rental car, fly into LGB. Rental cars are cheaper there, and JetBlue's $110 each way tickets are very reasonable. If you don't need a car, fly Alaska into SNA and take one of the shuttles.

One other nice feature of Alaska is they have automated refunds if you exercise the price guarantee. So I buy my flights as early as I can, and then register them with Yapta. If the price ever drops, Yapta will notify me and send me a link, click the link, and I get the difference deposited in my Alaska account for a future flight.

We always fly into the OC as its so much cleaner and quick. LAX is so large and further from DL.

AK is fast and the gate areas are clean. It's our preferred and only choice when doing a W Coast trip.

"If you check in within 24 hours of an Alaska flight you can upgrade"...

Seems like you meant "can" in a much more nebulous way than I read it. To me, you were saying that if you're checking in then, then you CAN upgrade. Not "then you might be able to upgrade if all the 1st class spaces aren't already purchased or given to higher status people".

You never know how people are going to read words like "can".

We live in the Seattle area and have done VA to LAX as well as AA to both LAX and SNA. Both times we flew to LAX we only did so because of sale fares that put the roundtrip cost of the flight at under $125. Otherwise we will only fly to SNA. Infact after our last flight to LAX Alli said no matter how much $$$ we saved she wasn't ever going to LAX again. So I guess thats out! AA is perfectly fine for such a short flight. Do I miss having entertainment options? Honestly, yes. We have also run out of food options on our flight and now always reserve our cheese plate in advance (we like something to nibble on during the flight) to avoid that issue. The planes are different varities of 737s, and are different ages. Some are newer and have charging stations, some do not. They also offer for $15 the option to upgrade to seats with slightly more legroom if not booked at checkin. These seats come with priority boarding and (supposedly) a free alcoholic beverage. If any first class seats are available at checkin the upgrade for those is $50. We did the $15 upgrade on our last flights (Dec) since each time only one first class seat was available. But were never offered our free beverage..... Which is fine since I don't drink and Alli takes motion sickness medicine to fly and pretty much passes out. But if you advertise it, maybe offer it?

Seattle here too.. and we go between Alaska and Jetblue .. this April will be Alaska. . never had any complaint with either company.. love LB and SNA. dont care for LAX at all..
