This past trip we had especially looked forward to V&A--it was to be dinner # 20 for Mrs. U and me at this fine restaurant. Well in advance of the trip,we told the other 2 couples we were going down with about V&A, so they could make other arrangements for themselves. Well-they became so intrigued with V&A that they decided they wanted to go!!
This worried me a little--our friends do like good food, but also seem quite happy at Applebees and Chi-Chi's, or with steamed crabs a a Bud. So we gave them a few menus from our collection and reminded them about how much this was going to cost. I also emphasized that dinner at V&A was a sum of all it's parts . No cheesey fries, no baked potatoes, no peel n' eat shrimp, no pitchers of Budwiser, no 48oz t-bones. They claimed they understood--and they still wanted to go.
So it was with some degree of trepedation that we arrived at V&A at 6:00 on Monday, 9/30. But guess what?? I needn't have worried--they LOVED it!! In fact, they are still talking about it today.
On arrival we were seated immediately. As usual, we had Pete as our "Albert", but this time instead of our usual Nancy or Terry as "Victoria", we had a "training" Victoria. Pete (as Senior Albert on the staff)gets to train all new Victoria's and so it was this evening. I must say she did well--a little too formal from time to time, but all in all, a fine job.
Presented with our menus, drinks were ordered. Four of us opted for wine pairings. One ordered a glass of wine, the other a Black Russian. Pete indicated that since V&A has no bar, drinks are obtained from the bar at Citrico's. But since Citrico's is closed Monday and Tuesday, drinks (and beer) come from the bar at Mizner's.
Since listing who got what at dinner would make this a very long post, I'll just list the menu as we had it that evening and say that among the six of us we managed to have everything listed EXCEPT the Mushroom Ravioli and Veal Sweetbreads. And no one got the Chocolate Mousse or the Pineapple Crepe for dessert. But other than those few things--we had everything!!
Amuse Bouche
Iron Horse Fairytail Cuvee (Made especially for WDW I was told!)
Vanilla Citrus Cured Petit Poulet with Salsify
Lemon Boy Tomatoe with hearts of Palm
Mushroom Ravioli with veal Sweetbreads
Mustard Marinated Porkloin with Spaetzel and Huckleberry Jus
Duck Consomme'
Hubbard Squash Cream
Alaskan Sable over Brentwood Corn Risotto
Pheasant Roulande with Lump Crab and Italian Couscous
Grilled Prime Filet over cauliflower-potato puree
Seminola Crusted Lamb tendeloin with vegetable ratatouille
Passandale Reblochon De Savoie and Colston Basset Stilton /w poached pear (served with Ferria Tawny Port)
Terrine of Sorbet with seasonal fruits(served with Reisling Roxheimer Berg Nahe 2001)
Hawaiian Kona Souffle
Grand Mariner Souffle
Caramalized Babana Gateau
Vanilla bean Creme Brulee
Pyramid of tanzani Chocolate Mousse
Warm pineapple in Crepe 'Purse"
And of course, coffee in the gravity coffee maker( which usually fascinates patrons in direct relation to how much wine they've had !!)
Oh--a word about wine pairings. Usually they offer 2--a regular pairing consisting of American wine (35.00) and a "special pairing at $45.00--consisting of Europen wines. But this nite they had only one pairing--$42.00 and it was a mix of wine from US, S. America, Europe and S. Africa. It may be that now this will be the only pairing available--?
Anyway--menus handed out after the meal, roses for the ladies, pictures taken by Pete (and of Pete!) and six quite full and happy patrons left V&A at 8:45---2 hours and 45 minutes after we sat down. The $$$ for all this?? Including tip--$940. But at least valet parking was free-!
A memorable evening---.
