I really need to stay in touch with my DD at home while on our vacation. Do you have to buy some kind of over sea add-on to your verizon plan so you won't be charged some ungodly amount? I would also like to post pictures to facebook of course

Using you cell phone to keep in contact (as a phone) will involve ungodly costs. The signal onboard must go through Cellular at Sea (basically the signal travels through the ship's tower to a satellite, back to a land-based tower then to the Verizon system - and in reverse back to you).

We use the internet onboard. Still an extra cost, but more manageable (especially if you opt into the free 50mb package on embarkation day). Also, some ports have free wifi available in various locations.

You need to call 611 on your phone. Verizon now offers packages for $40 that give you 100 min talk 100 out going texts and 100gb data for use on the ship and most carb. islands. I know that this is now available on NCL and other cruise lines as an alternative to cellular at sea.

Oh, thank you that sounds perfect:)

I have this on my Verizonwireless acct and it is great. If you don't have the plan you will pay $1.79 per minute for calls.

For a $40 Verizon plan I got 100 sent texts (unlimited received) 100 minutes of calls and I don't remember the data because I didn't use it. Pictures wouldn't go through, but calls and texts mostly did. Calls I made went through better than calls I received, but received texts came through better than texts I sent. It was worth it to me. added it to begin just prior to our trip, and dropped it right after our return. I will do it every cruise from now on.
