Vent.....Swagbucks wants me to join facebook. I will not be assimilated

The thing you are forgetting is that those gift cards aren't free. You're exchanging your time and information for them.

No, unfortunately, you cannot.

Actually, yes you can.

To the OP, I realize you don't want a facebook account and there's nothing wrong with that, but companies are having to get creative with their advertising now that everybody fast forwards through commercials with Tivo or watches everything on Netflix. They are "paying" (with SBs) you to click on an advertisement. If you don't want to, then don't but you don't get "paid" either.

To earn swagbucks, just watch a few SBTV videos. For every 10 you watch, you get 3 SBs. You can win up to 75 SBs a day through video.

Every day you can get 2 SBs for visiting NOSO, 1 SB for having to toolbar, 1 SB for visiting the trusted survey page (you don't even have to do the surveys), and 1 SB for voting in the daily poll.

Play the games under the game tab. Play a game, then hit the "back to games" button. For every 2 games you play, you get 2 SBs for a total of 10 a day.

Check for videos under the special offers. Just let them run and get your points.

Check your swidget for swagcodes.

I didn't know about the earning through games. I am a fan of the word swap and the snow day game.

I do the other things and I work the non facebook things as often as possible. I am also shipping them my books that I don't need anymore to earn additional bucks.

It was just a vent about the proliferation of facebook into the daily life of non facebook people. I understand the need for companies to stretch their advertising dollars as far as possible.

I'm not a "hardcore" swagbucks user, but I usually get my 5 $5 amazon gift cards a month. You're welcome to message me if you have any other questions. Sorry so much of it is facebook. I usually do OK with filling out the surveys. I qualify for several a month. They are a bit time consuming though.

I love facebook but only for keeping in contact. I can tell you that I will not "like" something just to get something for free or discount. When you do you are sharing your information and all the information of your friends and I don't share my information to people I don't know on there. Plus, I don't want to share my friend's information unless they give me permission (and getting permission from 290 friends wouldn't be easy). So I'm right there with you in not wanting to like something just for a discount but I do love my facebook.

This is why I am not on Facebook. It's not whether I will share my info randomly, because I won't. But, when you have 100s of "friends" with your info, they can share it anyway they chose. Everytime they do something stupid, you are linked to that.

I miss out on lots of info and deals not having Facebook, but I'm okay with that. :thumbsup2

OP here. I want to clarify one thing. Having a pic up is not the same as posting my entire personal life on a website that collects valuable information about me and is available to people that can and would do harm to individuals.

My perspective about not wanting to join Facebook comes from an entirely different place than the average person and I was not being uppity about it. I readily admit that on a very good day, I can out uppity the best of them. My nose can point due north when I want it to. I wouldn't expect anyone here to know that because my every waking thought is not available for the world to see along with my drunken night at the nightclub.

Being annoyed about a site wanting me to be a member of another site to reap the full benefits is just that, an annoyance. It was a vent because I am pretty casual about using swagbucks and just kind of noticed that all of those things were interrelated. I just wanted to Amazon cards to load books on my Kindle.

I make no judgement about anyone who chooses to us Facebook as a method for communicating with people. It is not for me and I said as much. I don't want people looking me up from my past. I don't want to check a website to find out what is going on with my friends and I don't want to randomly cruise sites looking for people that I used to know.

It isn't for me. Free gift cards are.

So use a fake name and fake info. Then no one can look you up from your past and the info collected will be fake. Then you can get the free gift cards without worrying about people from your past or whatever.

I really can't hate on companies using social networking. It works. While I was still in business, at least 75% of my clients found me through facebook.

You can join facebook and set up an account, and make it completely private so that nobody can search for you (you will be invisible, even if someone searches for you by your email address). There's no false pretenses there and it's not a dummy account.

That is true. My personal facebook account (rather than my fake account for games and stuff) was locked down so tight that when my lab partners couldn't find me, even with all my info. :rotfl:

What makes the world go 'round is that there are all sorts of different people that live on it. I am another anti-facebook person but I could care less who is or isn't on facebook. It doesn't interest me butnif it floats your boat go for it. Just a note though, for all of you that keep touting the fact that things you put on the internet can be private. In this day and age of advanced data collection by companies and hackers there is NO SUCH THING as internet privacy. :surfweb: Really. My hubby worked for the government for years and worked in the same department as the computer security guys and let me tell you - if someone wants your info. bad enough, they will get it. :sad2: This doesn't stop me from doing what I want to do on the internet, though, its just too convenient and fun. Life is short, do what makes you happy. If facebook is your thing - have at it! :thumbsup2

No, unfortunately, you cannot.

Yes, you can. I can't be found on Facebook, and if you find a friend's profile or something that I have posted on, my name isn't even a hyperlink that can be clicked on.

If the OP doesn't want to use Facebook, she doesn't have to. But begrudging companies the right to use a marketing tool is just ridiculous. You don't want to use Facebook -- fine. You miss that opportunity. I don't always call for the coupon on the bottom of my reciepts at stores because I think it's too inconvenient (or I don't have time -- or I don't want to give them my zip code -- or whatever reason). I miss that opportunity. Move on. It's not some grand issue of society and life and death and rights.

Maybe it has to do with when you made your account? I only made my account recently and the highest level of privacy available is 'visible to friends of friends."

You need to click 'Custom' in the privacy settings and from there you can edit it right down to specific people if you want. I have custom settings because I was playing some FB games and I didn't want those people to be able to see anything on my wall or my info.

I am completely invisible on facebook. Even my sister couldn't find me until I changed my setting for a few minutes, she found me and then I reset it back to invisible. I also don't put any personal info on there except my name. My email address is even one I only use for facebook. So I set mine as nothing to share if someone does.

I agree with this! I hate how it shares all your friends info too, but I can see all my friends like this and that and more then likely my info has already been shared!! :confused3

I don't do the Facebook thing, so I don't really know the ins and outs. I did open an account with a variation of my name and my spam e- mail that I use. A couple of people still found me, I guess I don't know it enough to know how to be totally "invisible". But honestly I just use it for free stuff and I friend no-one. I have told all my friends I don't use Facebook, a few have still sent me Friend requests and tried to give me a hard time because I don't answer, I just say sorry, I just don't use it.

They have forgotten about it and moved on, and I get my free stuff, right now my only "friends" are companies who send me stuff.....:rotfl: I can be bought apparently. :lmao:

Personally I don't see the big deal. You can have a Facebook account and not use it except for your Swagbucks thing. You don't have to "friend" anybody. You don't have to post your personal info. So I am not sure how having the Facebook account will violate your privacy. You have to physically put your private information up there for it to be available. You don't even have to use your real name.

I think people who "refuse to be assimilated" are doing it for the standout factor. I just can't explain it any other way.

I'm with you OP! I don't facebook, I won't facebook, and nobody can make me facebook! I just don't want to get involved with it but it doesn't bother me that others do. I am surprised by how much personal info. people do put out there, photos, etc. and then don't utilize the privacy settings like you all were talking about. But that is their business as long as I am not expected to participate in it. For personal reasons I don't want to go there and my friends and family all know this and agree that I shouldn't join so my younger cousins stop by and show me pics of their kids in front of the tree, halloween, etc. and same with my friends so I don't feel like I am missing anything. My hubby and I say all the time that we are in hiding so we can't join!

I do have a question for you facebook savvy people that I have always wondered about. I have never had a facebook account, real or fake so they should have no info. on me at all correct? However, I occasionally get an e-mail that says so and so wants you to join facebook and look at their photos. I just delete it without really looking at the entire e-mail. Well the last one that I got I actually scrolled to the bottom of the e-mail and it said something like "come on and join look at all these people who you might know and want to be friends with". Well there were around 10-12 names or so with their little profile picture and I either knew or knew of all but 2 of those people. How did they know that about me when I don't have an account? Some of the people I know well but others I just know by name. Like one was my cousin's ex sister-in-law who I have met maybe 3 times. Another was a co-worker of my sister about 20 years ago who I met a couple of times in the 80's.

So my question for anyone who might know is how do they know this about me who they should have no info. on other than my one friend who wanted me to look at her pics but this person did not know any of the other people listed? I don't like that they are somehow tracking me when I am not even a user of their site.

I don't have a Facebook account, not because I'm worried about my privacy but because I do enough boring and stupid things on my own without having to add another way to waste time. My wife has an account if we need to get anything for free. she used to play Farmville, Countrylife, Mafia Wars and a few others but it only took one WDW vacation away from it to see what a tremendous waste of time it was. Now she just posts pictures for her friends and looks for freebies.

I think the whole facebook thing is out of control. If you post a comment on your friends comment, the next thing u know you get an email from facebook from everyone else who also commented. You get offers to locate people who are friends with your friends. I mean chances are if I hated back in high school; I'm pretty sure I coudl care less about you now!! Oh now it just seems like one be advertisement trying to get u to buy or sign up for something.

Because when someone joins facebook (Mary, for example), Facebook says to Mary "Do you want us to help you find your friends who are already on facebook?" If you choose YES to that option, Facebook scans Mary's contact lists in her email account, and searches Facebook for people in her contact list who are already on Facebook, and tells her "Your friend Susie is a Facebook member, click here to friend request her" If the people in her contacts list are NOT a Facebook member, she can have Facebook send them an email suggesting that they join facebook (which is likely why YOU got that email). The people who you saw the picturs of, are probably facebook friends with "Mary" already.
