So today at the college I work at is move-in day. Everyone in my office has been out ALL DAY with the students moving in, mingling, being outside, etc. I am the receptionist in the admission office, and was left here. Everyone else isn't working... out and about enjoying themselves, while here I sit- working, being inside all by myself.

I just want to vent. Any other receptionists out there ever feel left out? :guilty:

Doesn't look like you have it too badly, since you're here visiting with us. ;)

I used to love it when we had fire drills where I worked. Everyone got to leave the building while the receptionist had to stay in case of an important phone call.

My pet peeve when I answer the phone is people who call and say "you just called me, why?" Darn caller id. I used to work in a place with over 50 employees. I have absolutely no idea who called you or why. Sometimes they get quite belligerant.

Yeah same here. Another support staff lady just came down stairs. Stupid me thought that she was going to sit at the front desk while I could go out a bit. No... she was just getting her keys...

:rolleyes1

Oh, I feel your pain.

I was the receptionist's fill-in at the first studio I worked for... everytime there was a big lunch or a fun finished product to watch, I got to sit at the phones while the receptionist left to join in.

Then, when I became receptionist, they didn't have a budget for a back-up, so guess what? Yep, I got stuck again for another year.

So, hang out here on the Dis and enjoy a relaxing day while not answering busy phones but being there just in case.

I'm sorry, but I do understand!

All the time! I work in construction on a jobsite as a receptionist, and we have subcontractors come in all the time to give the guys (engineers, project manager, accountant and superintendent) free tickets to sporting events, (in suites!), taking them out to lunch. Guess who never gets anything? The receptionist who puts up with all their stuff! :headache:
They also get group outtings thru our company.. again guess who never gets invited??

That makes me mad too!!

You guys sure make me feel better!! I love the DIS. I'm glad I can co-miserate with you all!

We get this all the time.

"Some guy just called be about a load?".....I need more info, there are 4 different divisions with multipule dispatchers in each division.

"I'm calling in a pickup."..we ask Truckload, Less than truckload, or Brokerage. "I don't know, I just talked to a dispatcher a few minutes ago."..have to ask what company, how much frieght they have so we can take a guess who they talked to and 9 outta 10 times they get huffy because they have to give us this info before we can transfer them.

We have one account that will call here and ask for the GM to get a rate. He's not here, she calls the cell. Gets no answer. Calls us back, wants the sales rep, he's out making sales calls. Tries his cell, no answer. Calls us back, tells us neither of them are answering their cells, when are they going to be back,..the board doesn't say...they are making sales calls. Leave them a message on the cells and we will give them a message you are looking for them as soon as we see or speak with them. Don't keep calling us back, every 5 minutes wanting to know if they are back yet. If you can't get them and you get a rate from another carrier, go with that.

I just love answering the phones around here.....And I answer them a lot, even thou I am only the back up...but the actual receptionist can't keep her butt in her chair and just walks away from the phones when ever she gets the urge.

OK.... my vent over.

I love sitting in for the fire drills - no walking down 16 flights of stairs into 90 degree heat. Why they do fire drills in the middle of summer, I'll never understand!!

I SO feel you on that one. Very frustrating. :headache:

Are you sure what the other people are doing isn't "working." When I worked at a small college, everyone on staff was required to be there on move-in day, which was, alas, a weekend. We represented the college and our jobs were to greet people and help them with absolutely anything they needed. I don't remember them as leisurely or particularly fun days.

Trust me you aren't always missing out on something fun. When I worked full time on a college campus I was required to go to all kinds of "social" events. It was really networking and rarely fun. The perception is that it's fun, but not really. Meanwhile my real work wasn't getting done and so inevitably I worked late to catch up. Since I was salaried, no overtime.

I'm not complaining, it was my job and that was fine. However, now that I only work there part time hourly (by choice, yea!), I always "volunteer" to work the front desk during any of those events:) It's a win win situation.

I feel for you, OP! It stinks when everybody else gets to have fun and you can't.

I used to work at a public science center where I worked the front desk sometimes but mostly reservations and doing the buying for the gift shop. Most of the administrative offices were upstairs so there was a division between upstairs and downstairs offices. We had to be there at all times when we were open so when we were the busiest, the upstairs people would all walk out together and go for lunch. It got irritating after a while.

One Christmas Eve, there was hardly anybody from upstairs left because they all left early. Two of the remaining staff members came running down the steps with their coats on. The CEO had given them the rest of the afternoon off to go Christmas shopping. That really made me mad and upset.

I know exactly how you feel!! I work at a small community college in the student services office (combo of admissions, business office and financial aid). I am technically not a receptionist but am the first person students see when they walk in the office and the one that answers the phone for the main line to the college.

My supervisor and another co-worker are usually trying to see who can seem the most important of any "activity day". So when we have a fall festival or spring fest (mainly just days where the students can have fun and get fed for free), those two are out vying for the Pres and the Dean's attention while I sit in the office and continue doing my job. Very irritating. They don't even bring me lunch from whatever is being served!!!

I have learned to just smile and enjoy the quiet inside.
