We have been to Venice Beach a couple of times.
You need to go on the weekend and only for a few hours. I certainly wouldn't want to over night there.
If you don't like alternative lifestyles or being a little out of your comfort zone then possibly give it a miss. It is not the commercial touristy type of place, more offbeat.
