VB: no seeums & how to avoid them??

Wondering if anyone can tell me about the bugs (aka no-seeums) at VB. We've only been there during Xmas/NY's....no biting little bugs then.
First: How bad are they during the spring and summer?
Second: What works to keep them at bay?
Would appreciate some advice from VB veterans...or maybe the no-seeums veterans??

We always go in August. A CM told me the first time I was there to use the Deep Woods Off and it works! but buy it before you go because it is expensive in the gift shop.

Bumping up- I'm going in July and would like advice as well.

Use OFF. Apply it just like you would sunscreen.

Avoid the beach at sunrise and sunset.

Be glad if it is a little windy, this helps keep them away.

We've only had a problem one time and that is because we went to the beach at sunset. The itching from the bites is horrible.

There have been many times at VB where we haven't had a problem at alll.

Are the bugs usually worse in the summer?
