VB/HH like Savannah with bugs?

Just got back from a weekend in Savannah to visit some of my family.
We went down to Tybee Island so the kids could run around on the beach and the bugs were awful! Both my kids were tore up! (And this was during the day.)

I've been to HH before although awhile back. I know it is very close to Savannah. Are the bugs bad on the beach, too during the summer?

And on a similar note, what about VB?

We wanted to try both places next summer and I was wondering how bad it will be. Bugs seem to love my kids, especially my oldest. She always reacts so badly, too.

Thanks!

As a part-year resident of HHI, I can try to answer your question.

Yes, there are bugs here, a lot of different kinds. It's part of the southern experience! Maybe you could rent A Bug's Life to get in the mood, LOL.

Palmetto bugs (ie. cockroaches) are the bane of my existence.

HHI does have a mosquito abatement program (they spray at night)--it helps some, but if you are prone to getting bit, you will want to put on bug repellant. I rarely get bit, my dh is a magnet. I discovered Cutter wet-wipes this year, and they are an improvement over the usual spray as far as ease of use goes.

On the beach itself, there is usually a great breeze, and bugs aren't such a problem. However, there are no-see-ums and sand fleas that can get you, especially if you play in the soft sand dunes. Most kids prefer to play nearer the waves, so again, it shouldn't affect you.

If you spend the day on water that isn't oceanside (marsh, intra-coastal waterway)---ie. a kayak trip---you could try the combination suncreen/bug repellant that's out.

The Disney resort is located on Shelter Cove---we sat outside there last night at dinner and my dh got bit. But you take a drive or bike through the tunnel to get across to the beach side---and once there, you'll be fine.
