Same here. We carry a copy of our passport only. We also scan images of our passports, flight info, & credit cards: then email them to ourselves so always have access from our phone or via any computer if something happens

Yup... Never carry the original, that stays in the room/safe. We always carry a copy on us and keep a copy with relatives back home, in the event something ever happened.

Maybe the posts your read on trip advisor were referring to one of the special Vatican tours? The confirmation for the Scavi tour did say that we should bring passports in case requested by Vatican officials, but the security guards never asked to see them.

We did not need anything like that for our regular Vatican museum and St. Peter's tour.
