We took our family's first trip to Disneyland in 2014 and had so much fun. We got great advice on here so I am back for more!

My entire family (11 adults, 6 kids) is planning a trip to Disneyland for June 2017. Because there are so many of us of varied ages (2-60) and interests we will be renting a house. We are looking to put a deposit on the house this month. We have it narrowed down to two houses; one is just North of Disneyland near Ball and Walnut and the other is South near the Target on Harbor.

Only talking about the areas where the houses are and travelling to DLR, which would you suggest? We are leaning toward the South one (it has a pool) and it is on the ART route. But I am nervous about being able to get to DLR for rope drop. Any experienced home renters out there with advice?

I've stayed at a home near the Walnut and Ball intersection (a little south of Ball and west of Walnut). I have mixed feelings about that location...the proximity to the parks was really nice (about a 15 minute walk), but it was a little dark and lonely on the walk back at times. The M&F parking structure is just east of Walnut, so it forms a very large and kind of dark area to walk by late at night. While nothing bad happened, I admit that I wouldn't have wanted anyone in my group walking back there alone after dark.

If you are going in June, then I'd think the one with the pool would win hands down!

Neither area is particularly great, to be honest. I would go with the one near Target, since it's on the ART line. And you should probably consider renting a car or two.

We will have rental cars. When you say neither area is particularly great, do you mean as far as DLR proximity or the areas in general? Are they run down or shady?

Kinda shady. To be frank, I would not personally rent a house in either area, especially with such a large group of people of varying ages. I would look towards a nicer area, although that will put you further from the parks.

We have rented a few homes near DL, one was real close (near Walnut/Cerritos) and the others were a bit farther away. The one near Walnut/Cerritos was in an older but well kept neighborhood. We did walk it once and had to go thru a more run down area but we never felt unsafe. We ended up driving in after that because at the end of the day, our feet were killing us and the walk home was brutal. lol

For a June trip, I would definitely stay at the one with a pool. We always attempted to be there for rope drop but not sure we always made it. You definitely have to add extra time just to get there (and more if you are driving in & parking in the parking structure). I would just go with the flow and you get there when you get there, as close to your target time as you can. I have a lot of experience travelling with a large group of various ages. No getting around it....it just takes more time to get people out the door!

I am not familiar with the neighborhood near Target but I'm sure you will be fine. Make sure and read the reviews from previous guests!

I'd stay that your comfort in either area will depend on what you are used to. While Disneyland and many areas of Orange County are great, areas near Disneyland are not always the cleanest or safest. If you live in a city, you can probably handle it. But, if you're from the country or even small towns/small suburbs, it might be a bit shady for you. If you must pick one, I'd go with the one near Target. I understand that there are 17 of you, but from my familiarity with the houses in that area, I'm having trouble picturing 17 people in 1 house.

Okay, so let's change the question. We will be in Anaheim for a week, but also traveling to LA. Some of my older, single brothers don't have much interest in multiple days at DLR (I know, it's shameful). Where would you say is a good area to rent a house near Anaheim? We were looking close to DLR so that we could go back and forth during the day, but are open to driving.

A year ago, we stayed at Knott's Hotel in Buena Park. I hadn't been since I was a kid so obviously didn't pay attention to proximity of things. I didn't realize that Knott's was only 10 minutes away from DL. While down there we also drove to Huntington Beach, which was about a 20 min drive? If your brothers are into beaches, there are TONS of them up and down the coast line. At Huntington, we watched a surfing competition and some beach volleyball and did some window shopping too. I felt like there were alot of things to do down there that were within easy driving distance.

I think staying in Anaheim is a good choice and the rest of the non-Disney folks can still get to other activities easily.

The areas immediately around DLR might be better for day trips to LA than something a little bit closer if you're farther from the freeway. Being 10 miles closer is easily negated if you're 10-15 minutes from the freeway. If they want to do a side trip to LA they might consider a hotel room in LA for 1 night.

During the holidays, my cousins (17 of them) rented a house where you see the blue circle. They loved it. There were several teens and they walked to the house on different occasions, even walking back on New Years Eve around 9:30pm (one of them wasn't feeling well.) They never felt unsafe, and it was probably a couple of miles to get to the resort. They made it there before rope drop each day, and chose to drive instead of walk.

The house is on Boxwood, and they could see the fireworks from there. During their trip they also went to LA and Newport Beach (they love Newport Beach).

I too have a hard time imagining 17 people in one house. It seems like you'd have to find a house with at least 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms (maybe a few half-baths) and lots of sleeper sofas :)

Thanks to everyone. After some searching and some of your advice we found a place to reserve. Now we just have to wait 16 months to go!! Thanks again.
