We will be in the Williamsburg/Va Beach area in a few weeks. We were hoping to hop down to the Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills area while in Va Beach. Can you please give me an idea how far it is from point A to point B? What is there to do in the northern area of Outer Banks??

We used to live in va Beach. to get to Nags head for us it took about 1 1/2 hrs going down Centerville tnpk(back roads) To get to Hatteras, where you can drive on the beach ,about 3 hrs. Whatever you do do not speed on the way there. Lots of cops that love to write tickets to out of towners.

I was going to say the same time. Watch out for those Dare County cops. They do love giving tickets. :(

with the new bypass in it takes about 2 hours from williamsburg to kill devil hills. Just be sure (if possible ) to avoid heading that way on weekends since that is when most of the renters are checking in and out. I f you want a place down there that is out of the way and a little more laid back, you might want to check out Duck. Its near Kitty hawk except when you come over the bridge turn left instead of right. We like taking a lunch down there and watching the wild horses

Ahhh...my most favorite place in the world (except for WDW that is!).

I agree with the previous posters. I live in Newport News and it takes me 1.5 hours to drive down. There is a toll road that costs $2 each way and is a direct route after you exit I-64.

Things to do. In Duck there are TONS of gift shops all along either side of the road. These shops range from Bob's Bait and Tackle (always a fave with the males in my family :rolleyes2 ) to tacky beach shops (that sell hermit crabs and sea shells--I really loves these places  ) to high end clothing boutiques that sell shirts up into the hundreds of dollars. When I was down last week, I went into this new store (can't remember the name) that had BEAUTIFUL dresses for $75-150. Now, they were unique and one-of-a-kind and very well made. If I had the cash on me then. I would have bought one! But I digress :rolleyes1

As you drive further North through all the "areas" of the Outer Banks you will go through Southern Shores, Duck and then onto Corolla. Corolla is where these wild horses are located. Keep in mind that they do roam free, but i beleive that most have been kept in a fences in area since so many tourists have hit them with their cars. Heck, even I get excited to see free roaming horses walk though a town! We just need to be careful though...

In Corolla there are also many shops. Mainly high end since this is a "rich" (I hate saying that) part of the area. There is a nice walway that takes you over the Currituck Sound right next to the Currituck Lighthouse! I beleive it costs $6 to enter the lighthouse grounds.

Ok, so there is a sampling of what is to do when you are down there. Let me know if you have any other questions because I know where the good eating spots are too ;) :hyper2:

Another really nice area of the outer banks is South Nags Head. The beach road comes to a dead end there and the only traffic is from the people who are staying in that area. There is no through-traffic. The outer banks is a wonderful vacation spot. If you're that close, don't miss it. The beach is beautiful and kind of unspoiled. There is great shopping and wonderful places to eat dinner. My husband loves to go fishing on Captain "Big Al's" charters out of Pirates Cove. We chose Myrtle Beach this year instead. It was nice, but it's back to the outer banks for me!

Whatever you do... DO NOT eat at "George's Junction" (a seafood buffet) in Nags Head!!! We went there to celebrate our friends birthday and he ended up getting food poisoning from the tartar sauce. The poor guy was so sick all night...

On the other hand... "The Tale of The Whale" in Nags Head is AWESOME!

I have to agree about Tale of the Whale, it is delicious! We were there this past weekend and enjoyed RV's very much also. They were very generous with the food! The outer banks is our favorite beach spot. We live in Yorktown, about 45 mintues from VA. Beach but we never go there, we only go to the outer banks. You won't be dissapointed!

Hi All,

My brother owns a house on the beach in Sanderling, Just north of Duck. It is one of my favorite places to visit. Here are a few of my favorite places to visit. In Downtown Duck there is a great seafood place called Fishbones. Its in the shopping center called Scarborough Fair just across the street from Bobs Bait and Tackle. Just down the street from Bobs is a Hawiian snoball place that has great icecream as well.

If you are into surfboarding/skimming/skate boarding there is a great shop in town that sells lots of clothing and rents skim board, surfboards and kayaks. Its called Duck Outfitters. There is also a great store called WRV (wave riding vehicles) just down the road towards kill devil hills.

Hope you enjoy your visit.

On your way South from Williamsburg you could stop by Yorktown - you know where Cornwallis surrendered at the end of the Revolutionary War. The new Riverwalk at Yorktown just opened this Spring.

As for OBX:

I'll have to second the "skip George's Junction" way on the creepy side! :crazy2: We like the Carolina Seafood Buffet and Quagmires. I think both of these are in the Kill Devil Hills area. We do a little bit of shopping, always stop by The Cotton Gin on the way down (I think in Currituck County). It's bigger than the store in Nags Head. Also, The Farmer's Daughter and Forbes Saltwater Taffy - go to the one between the highways - it's much nicer than the others. Scarborough Faire is worth the drive into Duck - it always seems like it takes us forever to get into Duck. We stop at Captain Franks for hot dogs as soon as we get in town. I cannot remember the name of the shopping center though but I think it's in the Kitty Hawk area on the West side of the Bypass Rd.

Jockeys Ridge - one of our favorite places. If you're feeling energetic, climb this huge sand dune just South of the Wright Memorial. You can see everything from the top - definitely worth the climb. Great pictures and people are so friendly up there. We had folks take pictures of our group and we took pictures of them and a guy gave us a kite for our kids to use.

If you've got 4-wheel drive you ought to take your family out driving on the beach. There is a beach access at Oregon Inlet, and also one at Coquina Beach. Coquina is a great place to stop - they have a nice bath house with outside showers and a nice parking lot. Much less crowded than the Kitty Hawk/Nags Head/Kill Devil Hills beaches.

Put your toes in the sand for me!

Thanks for the ideas and refreshing my memory! Just taking notes since I am planning a trip, too.... we're in Hampton.

Jockeys Ridge is wonderful. Just don't do what my hubby did... he tumbled down a little while trying to retrieve our kite. Yikes. lol

Just had to say hi to another fellow hamptonite

One of our favorite places to eat is The Black Pelican. We are going the last week in August. Always a good vaca, even with hurricanes (we've been in enough of them down there) and always look forward to it. We usually stay in Corolla, it just seems to be a little more quiet and peaceful!

Second The Black Pelican. We ate there in June to celebrate my son's birthday. The waiter was fantastic, going out of his way to accommodate my 6 yr old DD and my 4 yr old DS. I highly recommend it.
