UY/Points Use Question

Hi Everyone! I have a December UY and have banked our points to next UY. My 11 mo window for September 2013 is coming up and I have a question about how the point usage will work. Are the points deducted for when the travel will take place or are they deducted for when the travel is booked? So if I have 320 total points, 160 from next use year and 160 banked. Can I use all of those points to make a reservation in October for a September 2013 trip? Any help or info would be great!! Thanks!

the points are deducted at the time you book. you need your points for 2013trip, they will use the banked points first.

the pts need to be available for time of travel. 1st thing to do is figure what UY your trip is in:

a sept 2013 trip is in your 2012 UY. that means you have access to any 2011 pts that you banked (you are currently in your 2011 UY) + current 2012 pts (current based on your trip dates, not when you call) + borrowed 2013 pts (if needed).

pts will be not be available for use elsewhere once you book a reservation using them.

keep in mind that your banking window closes on july 31, 2013 for current 2013 pts so that makes travel late in your UY a little more risky.

Thanks for the help!! I knew that the points needed to be there when you booked. I was just confused because I was booking travel for 2012 UY while currently still in the 2011 UY but from what you guys have said, it sounds like I can still do it! Thanks for the help!

booking window is based on home resort (11 months at home/7 months elsewhere).

booking window has nothing to do with use year.

Yep - when you place the call has nothing to do with the points being available. The only thing necessary is to have points valid for stays for the dates you are reserving.

So for a Sept 2013 stay and Dec UY you can use banked 2011 points, current 2012 points and borrowed 2013 points.

The need to bank or borrow is solely based on what is needed to have the points available for the dates you want to book. If you are in your 2012 UY and are booking a stay that is in your 2013 UY then you could use 2013 points without having to bank or borrow them. But if you had extra 2012 points you wanted to use you would first need to bank them to use into your 2013 UY. Or if you didn't have enought banked 2012 points and 2013 points then you'd have to borrow 2014 points.

It's easiest to just forget about when you are calling except for it being either 11 months or 7 months out from your check in date. Just concentrate on when your intended stay is and the UY it will occur in.

Here is what helped me to understand things. Everything is based on when the trip will take place.

First, I figure out what UY the travel will occur. Then I know I can use banked points from the UY prior to travel, points from the UY of travel, and borrow points from the UY after travel.

That is what MS does as well. When you call, as already mentioned, does not matter. If you are planning to use banked points for the trip, that does have to be done prior to making the reservation, but can be done in the same call as the reservation.

For example, I will be traveling in August 2013. I have a June UY. Since that trip will happen in my 2013 UY, I can use banked 2012 UY points, 2013 UY points, and then borrow from 2014 UY points if needed. The fact that I have to call to book this trip in September 2012 (my 2012 UY) has no bearing on the points that can be used to "pay" for the trip.
