UY - Have I Got This Right?

Hi! I'm thinking of buying AKV points resale and want to make sure I understand UY correctly. Our next scheduled trip is Xmas week Dec 2017. If I buy a contract this year with a Dec UY, then it will get its 2016 points on Dec 1st, 2016, right? Then I can book in January 2017 for my Dec 2017 trip using my 2016 and borrowed 2017 points, right? Once that trip is booked, the points are safe? TIA!

You actually are buying all your points until the end of the contract and they are in your account. The only thing is about when you can use them - so for a Dec 2017 trip you could book in Jan 2017 and with a Dec UY use banked Dec 2016 points, current Dec 2017 points or borrow Dec 2018 points. What points you use is based on the date of the stay, not on when you are booking.

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by "points are safe"?

I meant that they won't expire before the date of my trip. That's where I think I've got UY and the concepts of banking and borrowing confused. I thought points were deposited into your account annually but what you're saying is they are already there but just can only be used based on when you want to stay, right?

So for a Dec 2017 trip, I would have to bank my 2016 points by August 2017 to use them along with my 2017 points and if I wanted borrowed 2018 points? Is that right?

Yes on using the points. For most reservations you'll have up to 3 years of points available to use - if you haven't used them for a different reservation. That will be banked, current and borrowed. Which UY of points they are will be dependent on the date of the stay.

The points have to be available for the date of your trip at the time you actually book the trip. You would want to book this trip in January since Dec is a busy time so if you wanted to use the 2016 points you would need to bank them into your 2017 UY prior to booking the trip. That can be done even just before you book in Jan 2017 or you could bank them anytime after Dec 1, 2016 and have them waiting for you when you go to book in Jan.
