There has been a tangent conversation going on another thread that I decided to bring it to its own to get more visibility and input. Here is my scenario.

1. There are 50 2007 points remaining in my contract.
2. 56 developer points remaning
3. I want to book a reservation that takes 110 points
4. So, I am short 4 points.

My UY is Feb.
The reservation dates are 2/3/08 to 2/8/08

I call MS to make the resevation. The reservation is available, they grab the developer points, they grab my remaining 07 points and tell me that I have to borrow 4 points from 2008 to make this reservation. I agree and make the reservation.

The debate is that MS said I had to borrow the 4, but the other opinion was that I should have had to bank my 50 points into 2008 to make the reservation.

Which is the proper way to look at your points with the above scenario?

OOPS! I see you are in the '08 use year! Then the proper way is to bank the '07 points, use the developer points and 4 from your '08 use year. MS would NOT bank those '07 points for you unless you directed them to do so. If it was me, I would call back and do the banking and have the points reallocated so you are using the '07 points instead of the '08 ones.

FYI, there would be no need to "borrow" points from your '08 use year, since the reservation occurs in that use year.

This is not what MS is telling me. They specifically told me that the 110 point reservation uses the developer points, my current 07 remaining points and I have to borrow 4 points from 08.

If MS does the borrow as they are telling me, my downside to a cancel is that I will have 4 points from 08 in my 07 UY.

If I do what you say, and I cancel, then my 07 points are now in 08 and if I go and book an 07 UY reservation then I will have to borrow them bank, which you can't do, so I will have to borrow 08 points and then when I get in 08 use the banked 07 points first.

The Latter option above seems more complicated to me.

The reservation isn't complete in the system as it involves developer which causes things to be manual. So, I really don't know what will happen as the CM may realize my UY dates and do what you say even though I was told differently.

How does it look on the member web site? If it doesn't show correctly there, I would call MS back and speak to another rep to see exactly what was done. Since that ressie is in your '08 use year, there is no need to borrow from '08, and since you would need to use your '07 use year points, they would indeed have to be banked to use them in '08. The developer points might have muddied the waters if teh MS rep was a newbie.

The website doesn't show anything as its not completed yet. The Developer points slow the process down, so I won't actually know what they did until the reservation is manually processed.

I actually think that borrowing the 4 points into this year is a preferred solution to this reservation situation, then banking this years into next.

That should NOT be the preferred solution, since you should NOT need to borrow any points for a February, 2008 trip with a February Use Year. As noted, the difference is that those 4 points would have a restriction if you needed to cancel the reservation for any reason. If you don't change the reservation, the net effect is the same (as if they borrowed those points), but banking the '07 points and then using the Developer points, the banked points and 4 from 2008 is the proper way to manage this reservation.
