Using rider swap and FP+ on ToT

I have never used rider swap before, but I know there is no way we're getting my DS7 on ToT and the rest of the family really wants to do it. Can anyone explain how the system works? I was planning on getting a FP+ for this attraction, too. Will DS7 have to go through the line with us (I am worried about him being scared of even being in the queue)?

Get FPs for everyone in your party except your son and the person who stays with him outside the ride.

At the FP line entrance, explain that your son won't ride and request a Rider Swap pass. When the FP group finishes their ride, any 3 riders can ride on the swap.

Yes - FP for the first riders and then FP line for those on the swap.
