Using Reservation Points?

I have a few reservation points leftover from a modification to a cruise reservation. Since I can't use them at a DVC property, does anyone know if they will charge me the $95 fee to book them at a regular non-DVC property? Also, I was told that if you were within 4 months of your use year, you can not purchase additional points for a trip. One agent told me I could and then when I called back, I was told about the 4 month rule. Is anyone familiar with this? Thanks!

What are Reservation Points and how do they relate to Vacation Points?
A.
Reservation Points refer to Home Resort Vacation Points that have been converted to reserve accommodations with the Disney Collection or Concierge Collection. Once converted, Reservation Points cannot be re-used for Disney Vacation Club property stays or World Collection exchanges.

  • One Reservation Point is equivalent to one annually allotted Home Resort Vacation Point in the Central Reservation System.
  • Reservation Points have no other relationship with or comparison to Home Resort Vacation Points.
  • Reservation Points are established for convenience of reference only.
  • Reservation Points expire at the end of the Use Year in which they are allotted.
  • Reservation Points cannot be banked, borrowed, transferred or used to reserve accommodations through the RCI® or the Buena Vista Trading Company External Exchange Programs, nor to reserve accommodations at Disney Vacation Club Resorts.
  • Reservation Points cannot be returned to a Disney Vacation Club Member as Home Resort Vacation Points.

  • A non-refundable $95 transition fee applies per confirmed Disney Collection (excluding Disneyland Resort hotels in California, The Campsites at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground in Florida, and Tokyo Disney Resort hotels) and Concierge Collection reservations. If payment is not received at the time of confirmation, Disney Vacation Club reserves the right to cancel the reservation.

What is the Rule of Four?
A.
The Rule of Four guideline is that you cannot book and travel on the Disney Collection (excluding hotels at Disneyland Resort in California and Tokyo Disney Resort) and Concierge Collection vacations within the last 4 months of your Use Year.

However, you can travel in the last 4 months of your Use Year as long as you've booked your stay more than 4 months before the end of your Use Year.

In your case, if the points were made reservation points before the 4 month mark I don't think it applies.

Thanks for the links! I think the first agent was correct since I booked the trip several months ago. Here's my problem: I called today to switch resorts-I had one night on reservation points and the remainder on a cash reservation. The first DVC agent gave me the the information about the modification fee and the amount needed to purchase extra points since a standard room was not available. Before confirming the switch, I called to make sure I could switch the cash reservation and confirmed that change. Second phone call to DVC, the new agent informs me I can't make the switch based on the 4 month rule. I asked why the first agent was all set to do it and she had no idea why I was told this (which is why I came here to ask the experts). Anyway, I cancelled the reservation because I know my husband would not want to hotel hop. So, I ended up having to add a night to my cash reservation-a $600 increase since I had to upgrade room categories as well!

So, from reading the link-it looks like I should have been allowed to make the switch since it was not a new booking-it was a modification. What are the odds that DVC will re-instate my reservation tomorrow and allow the change since the second agent gave me bum scoop? Please let me know if I am misunderstanding this-thanks!

Every time you change your reservation, you pay $95.

I'm ok with the $95 fee-it's much less than the price I'm now paying with an extra night on my cash reservation and an upgrade in the room category for the entire stay! I'm just upset that I modified a cash reservation based on information that DVC gave me about changing my reservation with them. What is the likelihood that DVC will review the issue and allow me to make the change?

Ask to talk to a supervisor when you call back.

They'll likely work with you but if the category option is now gone, they can't change that. Adding a night would be a new reservation in a sense and changing categories certainly would be. Let us know what they say when you call them.
