Using Ponts for DCL

We just bought AKV and opted for the 320 point bonus instead of the $8/point incentive . The catch is, you have to use the 320 points by January (7 months from purchase). We will only be going to Orlando in September, so we had to find a way to use all those points! (I know, you feel horrible for us).

So, we decided to stay 5 nights in a 1BR at BWV, then take a 3 day cruise!! I know cruises aren't a good use of points, but we would never have used all those points anyway so we decided, better to "waste" them on a cruise then for them not to be used at all!

We are going to book the lowest category (11) to use the least amount of points; my question is: can you pay cash for an upgrade either before we leave or when we get there? I checked on Travelocity and the difference between a category 11 and category 10 is only $30 total, but it would cost us 44 additonal points!!

Yes, at check-in at the port, if there are any available you can pay to have an upgrade.

I don't feel using the points for a cruise is a waist. If we didn't use our points we wouldn't be able to go on the Magic for a week. Although, I have 400 points & my parents have 270, so maybe that's why I never understood why people say that.

Using pts on a cruise may not be the best use of points (IMHO), BUT they are your pts and you can use them anyway you wish too.

We cruised on pts in 2001, and it was great! Only paid for my DD for $500, so a $3500 4 day cruise for "$500", NOT BAD!!! Using points enabled us to "spluge" on buying things on the cruise and great excursions!!

You could always rent those points. Then use the money to book the cruise and still have spending money left over.

Go in January (Value Season) if you can. We are doing the 7-night Eastern for 327 points for me, DW, and DD4. Still left us with 73 pts (because we got the additional 2006 points when we bought). Value season can give you $8 to $9 per point if used correctly on DCL and to me is close enough to make it worthwhile (plus, we had just spent a week at CSR, so it was going to be at least a year before we made it back for a full week)
