Using points toward non-DVC reservation

My dad has a DVC membership. He has 26 points that expire before he plans to go next. I am planning a trip with my family to stay at POFQ before they expire. Can I use his points toward our trip at a non-DVC resort and pay cash for the rest? If so, how do I book this, or does he have to do it?

At a mod, 26 points would get you one weeknight in a low season. You would have to book them as separate reservations -- one night on points, and a new reservation on cash, with two confirmation numbers. You would have no guarantee of not moving.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize you would have to book it separately. That's something I hadn't even considered. I knew it would only get me one night, but I'm not sure it would be worth possibly having to move rooms. Thanks again.

Can't mix payment types on a single reservation. Points and cash never can mix. They're like oil and water, or sauerkraut and ice cream.

See if you can get a studio at a one of the DVC resorts.

Thanks for your input, but I'm not looking to change resorts. We already have a resort in mind, just wondering if it would have been possible to use his extra points that he's not going to be able to use anyway toward our trip.

Your choice of course but you could get a nicer room for a much reduced price in this situation. The 26 points should cover most of a studio for 2 possibly 3 nights depending on weekend/weekday and dates. With one time use points, you could get up to 4 to 5 nights for a cost of around $300-350 total assuming the 26 points would be free. That's figuring at 20-24 one time use points. The 26 points might get you one night at POFQ with the $95 fee. And while it's possible you'd have to change rooms, it's not likely if you don't get a specialty room type though you likely would have to check in again. A minimal savings over cash for the one night but possibly worth doing. And you might be able to work out something with the folks that would be even more advantageous for a DVC studio.

He ought to see if he can still bank them if they haven't been banked already or borrowed.

Were the points purchased direct from DVC or resale before 3/21/2011? If resale after 3/21/2011, they can't be used for a non-DVC Disney resort.
