I have just discovered that my iPhone is unlocked as tried my wife's O2 sim card in it and it worked. It's on the 3 mobile network at the moment.

I was considering getting an AT&T sim card and using it in my iPhone whilst I am over there but wondered how easy it is to top up and also what functionality will it give me when I am over there. Will it just allow me to make/receive calls and texts or will it let me surf the net etc? :confused3

Hi, I have an iphone too and used it on my last couple of trips to Florida. You have to be really careful as it can cost a fortune. We asked our phone company (O2) for advice before we left. You can use the internet/maps/email using the mobile phone network but it would cost you hundreds! You have to turn off data roaming and location services to stop this happening. If you can get wifi access (hotel, villa etc) you can access internet, email etc using this without incurring huge charges. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply - the information that you have detailed above is exactly the reason why I don't want to use my existing contract with 3 mobile whilst I am over there.

I have ordered an AT&T sim card and will top this up before I leave so will just need to see what I can do when I get over there (i.e. phoning, texting, surfing) as I am not entirely sure....

Have fun! Would you let me know how you get on with the AT&T card as we may do the same when we go in July. Thanks!

Look forward to hearing how you get on with the AT&T card as this might be worth trying to have data access :)

That's me off in the morning so fingers crossed my AT&T card works and I can perhaps post while I am there!!

Enjoy your trip :cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1:

where did you order the card from ?

I've had MrSimCard recommended to me as an alternative though as this also gives you a US mobile number and therefore free US calls) probably best value for this only comes if you also make calls to people/places within the US too.

For my personal circumstances MrSim doesn't seem like a particularly good deal though I'm curious to hear about this too! (though see MrSim also does AT&T cards so possibly that's where grantforest got his from anyhow?).

OK just back this morning folks - had a fantastic time....not a big fan of Thomas Cook though. Excuse the short post but in a nutshell the sim card worked fine on my iphone for calls and texts but not for data - I had to rely on wifi hotspots (there is another way to get around the data issue though I just never got around to it!!)

Try this sim. You can keep your number and you can get unlimited data for $1.50 a day. Sounds good. I'll be in the states for 3 weeks this summer, I can't live without my internet on the go with my iPhone. I'm gonna try this!

Interested in this also - but I'll admit I found the site a bit confusing!

I'd really like to get my iphone unlocked and have a sim that I can use just in the evenings to upload some pics to facebook while we are away. I'm happy turning roaming off on my regular sim in the day time, I'll only have it to text my husband if we split up at any point.

What I want though, is something pay as you go, so I just buy the sim, with the data minutes, and not have to worry about anthing extra.

Ah - I only wanted it for the internet. Would that UKabroad sim work in iphone 4 - doesn't it need a microsim?

Thanks for letting us know how you got on :)

Shame that the data did not work on the iPhone :confused3

You also need to change your APN settings, if you search the net there is a website that can do it for you easily.
