I own DVC points, and I often rent them out through David's Vacation Club Rentals. I am considering going on DCL. Am I better off just renting my points through David's for cash, and then using the cash to rent a cruise? Or, would I be better off using David's Cruise Swap Program?
If you are a US citizen you should be claiming the rental as income but not sure of other countries. As @pzw90 mentioned the swap with David’s ot the board sponsor DVC rental store is a way around this as they are not paying you but applying a discount towards the cruise.
If you are in the U.S. you still may come out ahead paying the taxes by booking through Costco, Dreams or somewhere that will give you onboard credit and or gift cards. Also when booking this way you could use a credit card that earns points/miles/cash back and you would also be able to pay with discounted Disney Gift cards.
I've watched a lot of videos saying that using DVC points towards a DCL is not a good use of points. We've been on 3 DCL's and only did it once. The thing I didn't like was when booking using your points, you're stuck in this "void." DCL always referred us back to DVC and vice versa. Very difficult with all planning aspects of the cruise. Was told by both DVC and DCL that it's a problem and "they're working on it." Don't know if it's been fixed.
Another reason I wouldn't use DVC points for DCL is that if we had to cancel the cruise the points would return as Reservation Points, not Vacation Points, and couldn't be used for DVC reservations. I'd want the points to be rented out, either directly by me or as part of a cruise swap program, and DCL paid in cash so that a cancellation would mean cash back to me.
