Using DVC for last minute options

We are planning a long trip in our RV this summer to see the western U.S. We will not be on a schedule and won't know where we will be staying more than a few days in advance.

We would like to use some banked points that expire in June 2012 for one or two-night stays at the VGC, Disneyland Resorts, or other western resorts included in our membership. We will keep the RCI nightly exchanges and the Concierge Collection in mind. I know about the $95 fee for exchanges.

I know our options are going to be limited and it is fine if nothing pans out. We can use our points later in our use year. Does anyone have any pearls of wisdom for us concerning this scenario? Has anyone ever had luck getting reservations with just 2-3 days notice?

You might find availability at WDW but I doubt if you will find anything through RCI or at DL. You should also be aware that at 60 days DVC turns over any available rooms to Disney for cash Guests. This makes booking a room on short notice very difficult.

I recently called to ask about a May reservation at DLR on points and they said VGC was gone but they did have rooms at PPH & DLH. I don't know if they will still have those in June, or last minute, especially since PPH & DLH are running some nice AP deals for cash, etc, but if you call now perhaps you could snag a room? The points are kinda high but at least there's no $95 fee for those two.

Thanks for the replies. We would be really last minute on any request as we are traveling at our own pace and have no schedule whatsoever. I won't be disappointed if nothing is available. I just wondered if anyone has had any experience with ressies 2-3 days out using any of the available resources.

I booked a BW room with 6 hours notice. So it can happen. And actually I had several options to pick from.

Of course it does depend on when you are going, as certain times are less busy at DVC resorts.

What is your use year? If you are in the last 4 months of your use year, you can't use many of the options outside of DVC unless booked before the 4 month mark.

We will be in the first month of our use year so that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the reply in case I didn't know. I have heard of that rule here on DIS. I've learned a lot here over the years! :yay:
