Using Disney Dining Plan credit before physically checking in?

I would like to know if I need to go to the resort front desk to activate our DDP when I checked in online with my credit card informations. I want to head straight to Disney Spring for lunch with our DDP credit before checking into our resort (if possible)

The last time we went our DDP was not active when we got there even though we had checked in online. We got there before we were assigned a room so I'm not sure that makes a difference.

As soon as we got our room assignment, everything was activated on our package.

I do not expect to have our room ready early on arrival date. I hope everything else will be activated except our room number.

This was a few years ago, but we had a split stay. One night an Animal Kingdom Lodge (room only reservation), and then a week at ASMo (package with free dining). I couldn't get my refillable mug the morning after our stay at AKL (technically day 1 of the package reservation), I had to wait until we received our room at ASMo.

I sure hope Disney changed this policy for we are DVC'er and technically our check-in time is after 4PM

We were at the resort and tried to get our refillable mugs when we discovered the dining plan had not been activated. There was a nice cast member at the register who contacted the front desk to have it activated.
