Using cash stays for park trips and points for resort stays

So had a little of a crazy idea and called up Disney. Got us a cheap Pop Century room for next year since we wanna go to the parks and I don't want to borrow points from 2021 if I don't have to. We agreed it would be more of a park trip and not much time in the room so I decided cash was best. Does anyone else think it's a good idea to use cash for cheap value rooms if you're not going to be there a lot and use points for the resorts when you're going to have a relaxing resort trip?

Many, many years ago we would either start a trip or end a trip at Pop Century for a night or two. While I like Pop for the value and their food court, moving was alway a hassle, even when we had a car. So we added on points to a final total of 345. After Mom has passed, it may be a few more points than I actually need, but I enjoy sharing them with friends and saving them for big trips. I'll have 12 or 13 people total for a trip in 2021.

We have a total of 125 right now. Looking to add on but later down the road as we have other big purchases first like our first house. After that I will be hunting the resale markets like a hawk

When I sail on DCL, I will sometimes stay at Caribbean (Pirate room of course) on cash.

Depending on your points, sometimes it makes sense to get a cash room.

We ran out of points this year but wanted to sneak in an extra trip to make full use of our annual passes. Rather than borrowing, I booked a few nights at POP century. It was perfect for a quick getaway! We knew that we'd be spending more time in the parks and less time in the resort, since it was only a four day trip, so POP offered a great option. The renovated rooms were great (much better than expected), transportation was probably better than our last DVC resort experience, and food court was more than adequate. Of course we'd much prefer deluxe accommodations, but we had a fabulous time!!!

We thought we'd try that one year, when we couldn't get a room for the Wine & Dine Half... booked at Pop, figuring we wouldn't be in the room much anyhow. NEVER AGAIN. Mind you, we'd never stayed at a value resort, before becoming DVC we stayed at Dixie Landing (now POR). We didn't get much sleep all week. There were kids screaming (from what appeared to be pure exhaustion) and doors slamming all hours of the night. I'll stick with DVC from now on, lesson learned.

Park or. No park,I don’t think I’d ever do that. But we were pretty much deluxe resort people as we were a family of 5. We tried once to stay at an All Star and moved as soon as we got there.

But, I think if one is comfortable with a mix of cash and DVC then I say it is the Perfect choice.

Once we have a family I think it will be deluxe only for us but right now it's just the two of us. A value resort at Disney is still a resort at Disney when we just got out of college this past May and joined DVC 2 years ago

Whatever works! :)

For WDW, we will book DVC via points, inbound via RCI exchange or off-site as needed based on available resources. This Use-Year we spent our cache of banked points, current points, a few borrowed points and two weeks of inbound RCI exchanges.

For DLR, we generally book off-site using another timeshare.

In our other points-based timeshare we will freely book either on the systems credits (aka points) or their cash programs. Mix'n'match!!

It used to be some DVC resorts have an incredible proximity to parks advantage that can buy you more sleep or park time vs resorts with longer transportation times.

But with the Skyliner, PoP will kinda have that proximity advantage, too.

I don’t think it’s wrong to add on cash nights/stays at more affordable resorts when low on points.
