I have a question about using a stroller as a wheel chair. I have a two year old son with a chromosome disorder it's kind of like low muscle tone, he just started sitting on his own, doesn't crawl or talk yet but with 10 therepy sessions (I have good insurance) a week for the last year he's showing signs of improvement. Anyway I will be going to WDW in Dec. 07 and was wondering if anyone had any experiance using a stroller as a wc and how it worked out? I'm not a small guy and will carry him as much as I can but they get heavy after a while. I just don't like to abuse any system. so any input would be great. thanks

when you get to the park go to guest services and explain your need. they will give you a GAC that will allow you to use the stroller as a wheelchair. check out the FAQ at the top.

also, can you pick him up easily and hold him on your lap on a tram? this may be an issue if you are using a car there. i dunno how people handled in on wdw transportation.

definately go to guest services with documentation from your childs doctor and get a GAC card:goodvibes enjoy yor vacation with your lil guy:cloud9:

He only weighs 30 lbs so I can carry him for a while but his 5 1/2 year old sister gets a little jelous after a while so I wind up carrying both of them :-P
A couple hours of that and I need a vacation from my vacation.....

You don't need a letter from his doctor to get a GAC (Guest Assistance Card), although some people feel more comfortable having one. Just be prepared to explain his needs as you did in your post.
The disABILTIES FAQs thread has information about GACs.

We used a stroller as a wc for our 8yr old dd in December. We had no problems at guest services. As Sue said just tell the cm what you told us in your post. You don't need any more info than that.A drs note is not needed.

Thanks for the info. The FAQ section is very helpful. DW gets nervous with some of the stories about people passing comments and the looks they get. I'm a very laid back person mostly but I have my "charming" side as my DW calls it. So hopefully all goes well but then how could it not in the happiest place on earth :-0

:grouphug: We just got back last week, and you dont need dr note, just have him with you when you go to guest services. They are so helpful. They gave us a red large sticker to put on handle of stroller. It said you may use stroller as wheelchair , and we also received a GAC. The CM at each attraction would direct us where to go with the stroller for that particular ride/attraction. Anywhere a wheelchair could go we could go without removing DD from stroller. It was so wonderful.:yay: :woohoo: :cool1:

I know exactly how you feel with this one my dd3 has very low tone due to her SOD and she only sits up she weighed in at 32 pounds and for me and all that I have been through it is like holding 3 10 pound bags of potatoes and not something you want to hold stand in a line for 30-45mins. I have never had trouble getting a GAC card on any of my trips I never bring documentation from my docs but I always have my previous GAC w/ me just in case I have any trouble. Don't worry at all what people might think or say about you having your stroller in line they don't know you and you will never see them again so let them be bitter on their vacation and enjoy yours.

Thanks for the input and information everyone. :grouphug:

My biggest problem is I don't just do it for family or friends. I have often enforced others to be kinder to people I have never or will ever see again,::cop: It's just me, usually after all is said and done I just go back to having a good time....DW is usually embarassed or upset with me for butting in....she's getting better you'ld think she'ld be used to it after this many years. oh well, no worries lifes to short

My family is very much like this when it comes to me and dd. For some reason god has given me the ability to ignore it although I most say on occassion I do get embarrassed when I my mom or mil do this. At the same time after spending two yrs of my life bald in a society that that is not socailly acceptable and most people think I am a freak I guess that is why I have the ability to ignore b/c it has truely bothered my family when they see other people making comments about me bald and even when my hair was growing back and it looked like I just shaved my head. I must say if I had noticed more people react in negative ways about seeing me I would have probably said something to them.

On another note I have been looking into some of the different sling/carriers to use when we go on our next trip since dd is as big as she is now for standing in line and especially for the buses when there is only standing room so far the mei tai look pretty good and the ergo there are price but it helps take on some of the strain. I don't know that the sling type carrier would be helpful for you since you ds doesn't sit on his own but one of the ones that you could use in a forward facing position for him to be able to see as well might be helpful at times.

Have a great trip.

I'm glad you mentioned those, since you're coming from a place of experience with this condition (is that the right word?). I was thinking Ergo, too.

I'm only 5'3", but have been able to carry DS with the Ergo, fairly easily, and he's now over half my height and over 30 pounds. Now, he's not really interested in being worn anymore, so I haven't done it recently, but it's MUCH easier than carrying him in my arms. :)

The Ergo has the head thing, I don't know how to describe it, it can sort of support the head, so if your son isn't good at that still, that might help with head/neck problems. But the body of the Ergo is really supportive, and the buckles and such don't give it as "hippie" a look as others (nothing wrong with lookin' like a hippie, but options are nice!).

I personally never got into the forward-facing thing with front carriers, and I know you can NOT do that with the Ergo. So if DS wouldn't be OK with facing you OR a back-carry (where he could face the same way as you) then I guess it's out. My son never got used to facing forwards while on my front, so he developed a great rapport with people behind me. It was super-secret, who he was smiling at, and what the people behind me were doing, but he had great fun.

There are also very supportive mei tais available, though those involve tying knots and whatnot...I found the Ergo last year at DL to be alot easier than the mei tai the year before.

Anyway, that's just an offshoot idea I was thinking about, but wasn't going to post b/c I have no experience with the low-tone issue, until the previous poster mentioned it.

Good luck, and please don't worry about what others are thinking. I'm from a family where extended nursing is the norm, and while I try to not nurse my almost 3 year old in public anymore (IT doesn't embarrass me, but HE does sometimes), when I have, I just ignore everyone. I might miss some nice looks, but I know I miss the nasty looks, and that feels safe to me. Plus, I know from my own face that sometimes a person can be thinking the sweetest, most loving thoughts, but their face just is NOT registering it. The women in my family have that problem, looking like we hate you while we're thinking wonderful thoughts about you. :( So perhaps, if you do get weird looks, you could just assume that they are like me (or are me?), and what they are thinking is not translating well onto their facial expression!

Have fun!

Thank you. :) I never even thought of one of those, which is silly because I think I still have a "backpack" carrier I used with DD when she was small hiking Whiteface Mt. a couple of times (and that is a lot harder than walking around Disney). I will have to check out the sling carriers they sound like they could work even if it's just for standing in lines.

I reread your original post and did see that you said your ds is sitting. I purchased this sling in Jan and have used it for parades during mardi gras and when we go out to eat while we are waiting to be seated. I will be testing it even more to make sure it will be holding up for our trip.

This is the lady I purchased my sling from.

I am also currently looking into this one b/c the weight limit is 45lbs. I also like this one since it is a little more hands free.

Our DS10 is in a wheelchair with a mitochondrial problem that manifests like low-tone CP ... we've never taken him in a stroller to Disney (he was already in a small-sized custom wheelchair when we first went in 2001) but we now absolutely IGNORE any looks or comments from people who have a problem when we use his GAC at any ride entrances.

On our first trip, I think, some lady walking past the W/C section along the MK parade route loudly commented, "This would be great if you were LUCKY enough to have someone in a wheelchair!" LUCKY??? Since then, I've learned not to let the ignorant ruin my Disney spirit! :)

No one who doesn't have a disabled child can understand the extra effort it takes to handle all of their needs and *no one* has any right or business making you feel bad for getting a *very* slight advantage in a theme park. And, of course, as we all know ... that "advantage" is more than outweighed by the other inconveniences like waiting for bathrooms and W/C accessible ride vehicles or entrances/exits!

Some brainless/thoughtless/careless/heartless people arequick to make hurtful comments when they see a row of wheelchairs getting a nice spot at a parade or using a GAC, but none of them are there offering any sympathy when it takes 20-30 minutes longer to get out of Lights! Motors! Action! down one of the elevators than everyone else! Or when you arrive at a show only to be told, "Sorry, all the W/C accessible spaces are taken ... come back next show!"

Mandy, thank you for all your great information. I checked both of the slings out they are pretty cool. It looks like something that would work (maybe even DW could give me a break once in a while :) )

LPt Stitch, Thank you. I know I should ignore people but my background and training usually don't let me shut it off. Luckily I do switch back to normal instantly after I "unleash my wrath" on someone be it for family or stranger. It would be nice if people would think about if they had to walk a mile in our shoes before opening their mouths about things they know nothing about, but unfortunately thats human nature and why we have violence and wars. Besides I'm happy just to not have to answer my phone or get up at 5am when I'm in Disney. :)
