Spoke with our guide last night and yes BLT has gone up to $120 for new members with $5 per point incentive. Since I was in the system prior to the price increase she is trying to get me the $112 price, but if she can't I will not buy at $120. I told DH that we could wait to see what incentive they offer next. She also stated that March was the user year for BLT right now. Can't I pick my own user year? Still confused on the whole user year thing.

guides tend to offer a certain UY - yes.

Can't I pick my own use year?

you should be able to pick the one that suits you - yes.

Still confused on the whole use year thing.

read this.

the basics:

1) if you always travel in certain months (like nov and dec), try to buy a UY that starts right before you travel (like an Oct UY)
2) you don't want to have to travel in the last 3-4 months of your use year (if you get a march UY, you'd prefer NOT to travel in dec through feb).

You can ask for Use Year that works best based on your family's travel habits. Tell guide that whether or not you purchase will depend upon your being happy with UY; that should do it. January, May, July and November are not Use Years. If you plan to travel November - February then March probably isn't your best choice for UY - - idea behind UY is to have one where you do not travel during the last 4 months of that UY, but of course as the years pass your travel habits may very well change and what is initially a good UY for you may turn out to be not so good down the road - - and this is a reason why some here will say to not worry so much about which UY you get.

Best wishes on your planning :goodvibes

Where exactly can you find the current incentives? I will be going to the House of Mouse this weekend and am planning to go on the DVC tour. I'd like to know ahead of time. I read over on a nother board that one guy got 2010
Disney Cruise as an incentive!! Where can I find the skinny?

princess:Thanks for all the great information. I have learned so much here-what a great community.
You can find information on the latest incentives on dvcnews.com.

Sorry for (kinda) hijacking the thread, but since it's being discussed here I figured asking here is better than a new thread:

Why is the last 3-4 months before your UY bad?

Example: My use year is December but I'm planning for a trip next October, why is that any different than scheduling it in July (besides the obvious point and crowd differences)?

Thanks in advance for helping me understand :)

it only affects you if you have to cancel. if you never have to cancel, UY is not a big deal.

for a dec UY, your banking window closes july 31.

1) for a trip in july:

- what if you cancel the july trip 40 days out?

no worries. you cancel the trip and are free to bank your pts into the next UY if you decide you won't use them in the next few months.

- what if you cancel the july trip a week ahead of time?

the points become holding pts. they will be harder to use, but you still have 4 months or so to try to re-use them or rent them.

2) for a trip in oct:

- what if you cancel the oct trip 40 days out?

your banking window closed at the end of july - those pts will expire at the end of nov.

- what if you cancel the oct trip a week ahead of time?

the points become holding pts. they will be harder to use, but you have all of 1 month or so to try to re-use them or rent them.

I did see that a cruise was an earlier incentive (maybe this past April?). I'm holding out too for the next wave of incentives, hoping a cruise will be in there! Interested to see what thread you saw that on.

Will they give you 2009 points with the March use year? You could bank those and start 2010 with double points.

If you needed to cancel October trip close to your travel date you are already beyond your banking deadline ( July 31, 2010 ) so any points used to make this reservation including Current Use Year points would need to be re-used by you for a new trip that would have a checkout date no later than December 1, 2010. That's not to say you shouldn't ever book a trip during last 4 months of your UY - - plenty of members do, myself included and have never been in situation of needing to cancel but just keep in mind if you are beyond banking deadline and need to cancel you'd not have much time left in UY to get another trip in using those points that were committed to the first reservation.

aaronmckie-

I think it through differently.

If your Use Year is December, then your banking deadline is July 31.

Let's say it's July 30. You haven't used your points for that Use Year. You're sure you will not travel between July 30 and the end of your Use Year, so you call to bank your points.

On August 5, your sister calls and says - let's go to Disney World on November 13!

You think it's a great idea.

But you banked your points.

Since you banked them, you can't use them until December 1.

So if you want to go in November, you will have to borrow points from your next Use Year.

Maybe that will give you enough points... but maybe it won't.

So planning on short notice during the last 4 months of your Use Year can be difficult.
