Use year -- do I have this right?

Dec is ideal if regular travel is Dec to April. You will be fine with Dec. Dec is not good if regular travel is Sep to Nov

Having a UY that falls before your typical travel times allows for the most flexibility in terms of what you can do with points if you have to change or cancel a trip more than 31 days out, or are traveling on borrowed points and have to change/cancel a trip.

With your times of travel, Jan through April, then I would say Dec UY is a great one. However, the months of Sept and Oct UY's will also work for those times, but would leave the summer as more vulnerable.

We own a June UY and are in the process of buying a Dec UY as it meshes with when we want to travel.

I do not mean to hijack your thread but I am wondering about UY as well. I am looking into buying resale and we tend to go to DW in September but would like to try to do December for Christmas time once in a while when would be a good UY for this? :confused3

september would be the "best" UY. (june and august would probably work fine, depending on when else you might possibly travel.)

you want to travel as early in your UY as possible. also, you ideally never want to travel in the last 3 months or so of your UY (jun-jul-aug for a sept UY) - largely due to traveling after your banking window has closed, which limits your options for any current year pts used to book the stay.

use year month is only an issue if you need to cancel. it has nothing to do with when you can call to book a stay.

I agree that August and Sept would be the best. IF you're prone to travel over the Sept Holiday weekend, those stays often start in August thus Sept would not be a good choice for you, not bad but not the best.

We tend to try to go in the middle or towards the end of September due to the start of school for my kids being in the begining of September end of August. So the holiday weekend is not an issue for us. Thank you both for your input. It is greatly appresciated.

Also sorry to hijack your thread, but I do not totally understand Use Year. Can someone point me in the right direction, I've searched and read and still don't really get it.

For the next 9 years we will usually travel in mid June-mid Aug, but could throw in a Feb (prez day) trip, or more rarely a Dec trip. I've just realized I personally can't pull the kids out of school for long periods of time any longer.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

let me repeat: use year month is only an issue if you need to cancel. it has nothing to do with when you can call to book a stay. if you never have to cancel, UY is a nonissue.

no UY would cover every month - june sounds like it would work for you and just leave a minor risk if you need to cancel the feb reservations, as the banking window for a dec UY closes on jan 31.

some examples to help explain:

if you have a june UY and a may 2012 trip and you need to cancel 60 days out, your banking window closed on jan 31, 2012 so you'd have to use all of the pts in the reservation before they expire on may 31, 2012.

if you have a june UY and a june 2012 trip and you need to cancel 60 days out, your banking window won't close until jan 31, 2013 so you'd have until then to decide whether to use current year (2012) pts for a reservation in that UY or else bank them to the next year. (you'd still need to use any banked and borrowed pts by may 31, 2013.)

if you have a june UY and a may 2012 trip and you need to cancel 5 days out, the pts would turn into "holding" pts so you'd have to use all of the pts in the reservation subject to a 60-day-out limitation - but that won't matter since they expire on may 31...which is less than 60 days out.

if you have a june UY and a june 2012 trip and you need to cancel 5 days out, the pts would turn into "holding" pts so you'd have to use all of the pts in the reservation subject to a 60-day-out limitation - but at least you'd have 12 months before they expire on may 31, 2013 to decide what to do with them.

Your travel times are very close to what mine are as I teach. We have a June UY and it works very well for my summer trips. I know that if we did have to cancel one of those trips, we still have some options left to use up any points that might expire (ie: banked or borrowed points) or holding points if I had to cancel less than 31 days in advance.

Even for Feb trips, they would be covered as the banking deadline is January 31st.

As mentioned, no UY is perfect for all travel times and it is only an issue if you have to cancel. But, having one prior to a typical time of travel, if you have one, does allow for the most flexibility, IMO.

I do think that a Dec UY would also work, but since your more likely to travel in summer than in Dec, I would try for June 1st.
