Use year conundrum.....

We are looking to add on at HHI to our existing SSR contract and have always thought that we should get them same use year, based on everything that we have read. But trying to find an under 100 pt October use year at HHI, has been like finding a needle in a haystack.

Recently though - after further research, I have found that because this will be a different resort contract, having a separate use year might not be as big of an issue as first thought.

So - DVC family, could you calm our concerns or tell why we should stick to same use year contract.

Thanks in advance

Two UYs is two memberships so it’s like you are two different owners,

That means you can not use both contracts for a single reservation without either transferring the points from one to the other or booking some nights on one and some on the other.

If you never want to use them together, then two UYs can work. But, if you have to transfer, then you can’t book online with those points. You can’t modify the reservation Online either,

And the points, once transferred, still maintain home resort and UY. The other big piece is that banked points can not be transferred.

I have 2 UYs but I never combine. That means I may be borrowing on one membership even though there are points in the other because using transferred points is a pain, IMO...especially since you can not see them online,

We own at AKV and HHI, both June UYs. We travel to WDW in the fall through December, so the June UY is fine. When we bought HHI, we thought we would always travel during the summer or during fall break, but since I've retired, we want to start traveling there in the spring. A June UY makes that risky. We are seriously considering selling our HHI contracts and purchasing a resale with more points with an April UY. We plan on using the contracts separately, so I don't foresee any problems with it.

Thanks for the replies. With looking for smaller add on, we occasionally may need to combine, so I guess the search continues for Oct HHI contract.

Also, as I just posted in another thread (I found out about this recently and want to spread the word!), if you have 2 different memberships (I.e. 2 different UYs), you can only access direct membership benefits through memberships that have direct contracts within them. I do not know if you have a direct contract or plan to add one, but just in case...

We do have a direct, we bought back in 2008 - but if I already have the blue card and I was staying at Vero with a resale HHI contract, how would anyone know if I show my blue card when I purchased a t-shirt from the gift shop to get the shopping discount? Is it the honor rule or would it say on my reservation?

Of course that works, no problem. But moonlight magic is a problem because it is tied to your reservation which is tied to your membership. I am not sure what other issues people might run into. I only found out about this recently!

This is not accurate. I have a blue and white card membership and no matter which one I am traveling on, I am eligible for all discounts, including going to Moonlight Magic, My January trip was booked in my membership with my white card and did not have a problem booking. It was noted that I had another membership that was eligible. When I picked up my bands, I showed my blue card from the other one.

I simply show my blue card. The only thing you can not do is use non qualified points with direct points for new resorts.

But, having 2 UYs with different cards does not prevent one to access benefits...at least it never has for me.

Agree with Sandisw. Once you have qualified for member benefits, point purchases thereafter are irrelevant to the issue of using member benefits. If you buy now resale points at HHI with a different use year, you will not be able to use those particular points to reserve Riviera or to trade out to reserve DIsney hotels or the Adventures by DIsney. However, even if you use only those HHI points to reserve a room at WDW, you will still be entitled to all member benefits If you already have the blue membership card, and that includes using Moonlight Magic. if anyone at MS said otherwise, then the likely problem is the MS person gave wrong information, which would be only the 455,234th time that an MS person has done so.

I have found the same thing myself, when staying on "unqualified points".
