Hey DVC'rs

Just interested in any views / thoughts from anyone who used their points to go on cruise. Any thought appreciated. Was it good value? Which state room category? Any recommendations? etc.

We used my parents points. It didn't seem like a good value to me. We used all the points for basically two years and still paid like $400 for a 4 day cruise. We have a ocean view. My parents usually get a large room in disney for a week. So, I don't think it's a great value.

You may want to post/search in the DVC forums; there will be more DVC folks there.

We looked into using points for a cruise and decided that, for us, it was not a good use. Instead, we're renting two years of points through David's and using the cash to book a cruise.

If you use it for the first two people in the room and pay for the others it can be a good deal.

It's a terrible deal. But I have done it a few times. I'm not into renting out my points. If you have points to use up and your not into renting out your points go ahead and do it. I will say.

We have done it twice, 11 & 12 years ago, and we were satisfied. I will not rent out our points, so if I ever had the points and found a cruise that we were interested in, I would do it again.

I did that with my first cruise. I was going to on my second cruise, but read threads about the costs of doing that vs. renting out my points and using cash for the booking. Overall, it is a lot less expensive to rent out your points and pay cash for the cruise and you have a better cancellation deal and on board credit from your travel agent. So, I rented out my points and used a travel agent and it worked out great.

Its easy to determine if its a good value. Just take the number of DVC points its going to take and multiply by $12 then compare that number to the cash price for your cruise. In most cases you'll find that renting your points and then paying cash for the cruise will be a much better deal.

Everything the pps have said is true but when it came down to it I just didn't want to go through renting my points and didn't have the cash. So I've used my points twice now and been very happy about it. I did the southern Caribbean with my one daughters family and had a 4A on the Magic. Next week I'm going on the Wonder with my other daughters family in a 9A. I think both staterooms assigned were good picks. Do what is best for you.

We used points the first year we cruised and found it was not a good use of them. So the next few cruise's we've done, we have rented out our points on David's and used the cash for the cruise. We usually have cash left over and we use that for airline tickets or extra spending money...

I did that for our first cruise, a 4 night Wonder in 2003. I paid for myself with points and everyone else with cash. I considered it for the 7 night Fantasy in March, 2017, but I decided to rent out my 2015 and 2016 points instead since we won't be back to WDW itself until 2018. I already rented out the 2015 points and it paid my cruise down payment. It's about the same $$ out of pocket as paying for one with points and one with cash.
