I heard on GMA today you can only carry on a quart size ziplock bag with items in it. Is this correct? Do they really mean a zip lock bag or one that size. Leaving on Dec 3 and would like to know.

THANKS

zip lock or not - it has to be the one quart size. anything bigger will not be allowed nor will containers larger than 3 oz. (i.e. an 8 oz tube with only 3 oz left in it is no good)

This regulation is for gel items only, not your regular 20" regulation carry-on suitcase items. You must put your gels, toothpaste, moisturizer in a zip top bag, take it out of your carry-on and hand it to the inspector. Make sure it is a zip lock bag, not a baggie with a twist tie.

GMA apparently didn't explain it clearly. Go to www.tsa.gov for the exact restrictions, but what they mean is most previously-banned liquids/gels can now be transported in your carry on luggage provided: No container is over three ounces; all products fit comfortably into a clear plastic quart-size storage bag; all such items are in their original containers.
This means you can't put a regular-size tube of toothpaste in your carry-on (no matter how much or little is actually left), but you can bring a travel-size tube; ditto for shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, suntan products, etc. The full-size product CAN be transported in your checked luggage.

Again, for the ACCURATE information, see www.tsa.gov.

So since I never bring any liquid or tubes with me I can still bring my regular carry on bag with me on the plane?

yes you can

The carry on regulations are not airline specific. All the liquid/gel baggy thing and the # of carry-ons is regulated by TSA and taken care of at the security check point, way before you ever get to a specific airline gate.

I just flew home from Portland last night. In addition to the 1 piece of luggage and 1 personal item that is allowed on board, there were a lot of people with the quart size bags, the inspector at the "liquids" check in actually had bags if needed. Each passenger was only allowed 1 qt. bag per person. People had these bags full of travel size items. I noticed many unmarked small plastic bottles so I am not sure about "original" packaging. Upon clearance from the ge/liquid check point the qt. size bags with the allowed items were being placed back into their carryon bags.

Personally I had 1 lipstick that I did not need to declare. I checked everything else, it did make wandering around the airport when my flight was delayed much simpler.

I also brought back a case of bottled beer. The only specification was that it needed to be boxed and packaged well. I checked it along with my luggage, TSA did open and inspect it, then placed their stickers on the box and it made it home in one piece - yippy, there be some good beer drinking going on tonight.

I think you misheard what they said.
They advise packing your liquids and gels in checked luggage.
They also said: If you do take liquids in your carry-on luggage, they must fit in a single, quart-size bag.
They did not say anything about only being able to carry on a quart size ziplock. Nothing about carry on allowance was mentioned other than what you could put in your carry on.

And in one of those things that DRIVES traveler's CRAZY.. NOWHERE on the TSA.gov packing tips does it say that the itmes must be in thier original containers. Some TSA agents don't care some do. So my suggestion is to have everything in a manufactured labeled container... (NOTE: My labels do NOT reflect what's really in my containers, but... )

And the bag MUST be a quart and MUST be a ziplock type of bag in some airports. In some airports using a SMALLER bag is grounds for throwing your items away. Also, if you only have ONE liquid item (ie toothpaste) it still must be in the QUART size bag.... (Apparently Harry Potter dropped over and put magical spells on quart size baggies!)

Surely you know that the quart size bags are made from materials that render 3 oz of liquids and gels inert and unexplodable. The metal in a twist tie serves as a catalyst and results in the the material being ert (that is the opposite of inert, right?) and explosive.

Ah, so THAT'S why you always appear so 'relaxed' on airplanes... (afk to rinse out multiple travel size shampoo bottles well, and replace contents with peppermint schna - oh, wait, did I type that out loud? ;))

I flew out of Hartford last week and if you didn't have your items in a ziploc bag you had to get out of line and go to the gift shop and get one.

It's a joke how it is being enforced at different airports.

:rotfl2:

Now I understand..... Why doesn't the TSA just provide this valuable info!

Now my labeled bottles are "within" the same category. So it says Shampoo, it probably is shampoo just not "Johnson's Baby" (I don't have to smuggle on the booze.... Do to flying way to much in the past, this year I still get upgraded to First where the FREE booze is! I will keep this idea for future use however.)
