Another thing I have read is that miniDV is still actually better than DVD in terms of picture quality etc. At the moment I am holding out for more HD cameras to be around at this time Sony have only got one for sale!

I was going to point out the exact same thing....make sure your relative is not buying a dvd camcorder because they think that in anyw ay they are better. The on-the-fly mpeg2 compressed image is vastly inferior to the uncompressed raw MiniDV bitstreams. Video editing and transfering to PC in raw data format cannot be done, and probably the only advantage is the ability to pop the disk straight into a player.

Hard disk based HD camcorders are the way forward.

Agreed, and no sitting in "real-time" waiting for your PC to download hour upon hour of tape.

Now all I have to do is persuade DW to "allow" me to part with the pennies when we have a perfectly good miniDV camcorder.
