I just wanted to share a funny story.

It was discussed on the boards about 2 months ago that Disney would be handing out new $1 coins as change in parts of MK beginning sometime in Nov. Apparently it was a big deal to Americans. My DD17 made a purchase at the Haunted Mansion cart and the CM made a HUGE production about giving her one of these new $1 coins. He was yelling it out to people passing by and everything. My dd just stood there with a "can I just have my change" look on her face. The CM was clearly disappointed in her reaction to receiving this coin. I just looked at him, shrugged my shoulders and said "we're Canadian". Talk about bursting someone's balloon! ;)

That is funny. I'm surprised the CM made such a big deal about it, and did he do that with every customer he had I wonder?

BTW, what did it look like? I recall reading somewhere that it was supposed to represent 'native american' culture. I wonder if they'll still have them when we get there in February. Wouldn't mind seeing what all the fuss is about. ;)

Speaking of 'new coins', I received a new US $1 coin the other day and its pretty neat looking. Its different from ours in that the date and the "in God we trust" is printed on the side of the coin. Cool.

It definately represents Native America.

It is about the same size as a quarter.

Cool....but whats the "2000" for if it just came out this year? :scratchin

Huh, I didn't even notice that when I grabbed that image from google. I just checked the coin I ended up bringing home and there is no date on the face, either side, it is stamped onto the side of the coin and very hard to read.

They were originally launched in 2000... made a big deal of it then too, believe it was Wal-Mart that was the big distributer. But what happened was that people saved them and did not spend them.

We used to also have a silver Dollar with JFK on it, but that did not last either.

It has actually taken us a while to get used to the dollar coins since the move. When you are used to only having "change" as coins, one and two-dollar coins used to really pile up and it felt like we spent money faster, but had tons of "change".

Now that we have been here more than a year we are used to it. That and I had to buy a wallet with a larger coin holder!

When we were in Vegas (twice in fact) we got US $1.00 coins from the vending machines at the monorail stations....I guess Vegas is the only place in the US that has continuously used $1.00 coins over the years....:confused3

As an American living in Calgary - I consider them coffee money.. :lmao:

How come all American coins and Canadian coins are exactly the same dimensions, including this "new" American dollar coin?

I was going to guess vending machines...

But I actually think those are done by weight, because I remember when the Mint changed the composition of the dime, it was lighter and vending machines wouldn't recognize the lighter weight. They would just drop right through to the bottom.

Of course, this is all just a guess, so I could be completely wrong :)

If I had to guess (and it is a guess) I would suspect that it has to do with buying the dies for minting the coins. If the two countries have the same size coins, they can get the same parts from manufacturers. But, I have not a lot of knowledge about how coins are made, so take the guess for what it is worth.

I guess that Disneyworld will have trouble accepting my 1 million dollar coin:

I work in the vending industry. It hasn't been done by weight for years. The coin mechs actually identify the coin by the metal content in the coin. They're really high tech. The coin passes through a pair of electronic eyes and it either tells the rest of the mech if it is good or not. Gone are the days of slugs and washers working. When they switched the metal content, all the companies were forced to send their coin mechs into the manufacturer for an electronic update. It was not possible to do them all at once so for a long time there was a phase in of the new electronic hardware. Am I boring you yet?
