Came home from work to find a note from UPS. Our Photobook has arrived, great! Then I read the fine print and I owe them $34.49 for a "Brokerage Fee", I guess the money Disney charged for shipping wasn't enough. OK, fine, bite the bullet, just get it, right. Call the 800 number and get a computer that tells me the same thing the card says, no options, just will keep trying to deliver it. Helloooo, we work for a living therefore no one home. At least Puralator gives you an option to go pick it up and doesn't charge you half the value of the product to receive it. Am I to take a day off and wait for it to arrive and lose a day's pay? Ah but which day??? No one to talk to:headache: :headache: , OK I'll look on the website, reading through a rocket motor manual is easier, at least it's more informative.

I've read on another board about this Brokerage Fee. But Disney did not give you a choice, UPS or nothing. I could have waited for snail mail but it was not an option. This is a complete rip off, I have ordered other things online from the States and have never been charged this much for anything.

Thanks for reading my rant.
Chris.

You are correct it is the UPS brokerage fee and they are the highest charging courier going. It is to bad Disney doesn't choose to tell Jostens (that is who produces teh book) to use Fed Ex like DVC does.

Yeah, UPS is crazy expensive. Just a note. I have left a note with my signature and date asking them to leave the parcel at my backdoor. They have done it everytime. :confused3

I had previously posted about my $72 in brokerage fees because I ordered 2 photobooks at the same time but they sent them as two separate packages and hence the double fee. I talked them down to only paying one fee plus GST on the 2nd one (total $39.91) which I paid to the driver. My book actually arrived during Christmas vacation so I luckily didn't have to take time off work or find a friendly neighbour to accept the package. Yesterday I received a bill for an additional $4.29 GST fee. What is going on with that? I was planning on phoning today but we had another snow day (well really freezing rain day) and so I'm working from home and with the kids at home it's hard to get any work done let alone try to call and argue with UPS.

Yup, $35 brokerage fee here too. Fed Ex works better. USPS is the best but not always available.

I have had that same experience too. I ordered $25 worht of merchandise, and was charged $28 of tax and brokerage fees. I was fuming, to say the least.

Now I will only order from the states if they will ship by USPS, and then delivered by Canada Post. Canada Post only charges $5 brokerage fee, which is a much more reasonable amount.

I'm going through a billing problem right now with ups, i paid them there fee at the ups warehouse in barrie, 2 months later i received a letter from there collection agency, 2 weeks later, i'm still fighting them, even with my receipt they don't believe i have paid, and plan on reporting to the credit bureau.

I have a receipt stating i paid the fees in full, but the payment is lost, so they're blaming me ! they have started a file with there acct dept, but still threaten me with a bad credit report.

I would go to not only the better business bureau but also contact their acct department regarding this.

I have contacted the accts dept, but the 3 people I spoke with needed ESL lesson's, and argued with me over the matter, i then faxed them my receipt, and payed a visit to the location I paid at...

I even faxed the receipt to the collection agency, and they said ' it looks legit", will look into it, then they followed up with a letter stating pay up with 10days or it will go against my credit report, haven't heard from anyone as of yet from the collection agency or UPS acct dept.

My husband and I also hate UPS, as do many of our friends who own vintage vehicles. Many of the companies that sell parts for the old cars in the USA only ship UPS, which is a royal pain, as they charge way too much for the duties and brokerage fees. And it's the brokerage fees that they make a killing on. If you were to have the samething shipped USPS, and UPS, the item shipped via UPS will always be alot higher for the brokerage and duties. Sometimes the items we've had shipped via UPS, the brokerage fees and duties were worth more than the item purchased. We try to avoid using UPS whenever we can when purchasing items via the webstores in the USA.

My husband and I also agree with you. We order old vehicle parts through companies in the USA that only use UPS. The brokerage and customs fees are way higher using UPS than USPS. We hate UPS, as do many of our friends who also have to deal with them. Their brokerage fees are much higher than USPS, and this is how they make their money. We try to have the companies we purchase from use USPS instead of UPS. And avoid them whenever we can. We've purchased items from the USA that when using UPS, the brokerage fees and duties were more than what the item cost.

I found this pic on another site and thought many of you might enjoy it.

I too will not purchase anything from a store that uses UPS. Too many surprise fees. My mother sent two easter dresses for my daughters from the states as GIFTS and she sent it via UPS. She asked the clerk in the US if there were any other charges for it and was told nope. The package arrives and we get nailed for a brokerage fee on a GIFT item. It was ridiculous because the brokerage fee on a gift was almost the same as it was for the items. Last time she shipped UPS.

anyhow, here is the pic.

I got nailed by UPS ordering something as well. When I looked into it, there are NO regulations telling them what they can charge for brokerage fees as it is a service they are providing, by acting as your customs agent. I won't give them my business at all. I am starting to notice some American sites I have wanted to shop for are up front about not being in control of these fees but they don't seem to understand that they ARE in control of the company they chose to use for shipping, and that essentially puts them in control of what international customers have to pay.

UPS = the Big Brown Bully in my books!

Well we received our book by leaving a check in an envelope for their crazy $34.94 brokerage fee taped to the door. The best part was the person took the check out of the envelope and tossed in on the ground on the walkway:confused3 . I can't win.

The book itself is great, is it worth all the money? I guess it all depends, I could not have put anything together half as nice so for me it was worth it. The added fee hurts but what can you do other than try not to deal with them again.

Chris.

UPS are crooks.
I won a bat on ebay, a new style 'Toledo', for about 20% of its value. It was shipped UPS, who charged me taxes and brokerage fees on their value of the bat. The total was almost double what I paid for it. I refuse to have anything shipped by them.

It's my understanding that a Class Action was being organized against UPS regarding their brokerage fees. I read it in the Star before Christmas, because with the high dollar it was effecting more and more people.

I refuse to shop on any website that uses UPS to ship to Canada exactly for the reasons outlined here. If that means doing without an item (or getting it at a higher price at home) so be it. One option I have that a lot of people won't is that a friend of mine has a daughter in grad school at Notre Dame. So if I really need (or more correctly, want) something from a site which only ships UPS I have it sent to her address. Then, the next time my friend is down visiting his daughter he brings the item back for me. Because the value of the items is small he easily can get them in under his 48 hr exemption.

For me, it's cheap. Shipping costs with the US are a lot lower and no brokerage, duty, or taxes are due. And it only cost me a bottle of wine at Christmas. :)

You can go to Canada Customs pay taxes and custom fees if required, and provide the proof to UPS on delivery then no fees of brokenage will be charged. Brokenage UPS is a service but what UPS does not tell you is that you can reject this service yourself by going to Canada Customs at no cost.

Hmmm I 'm thinking of getting my Photopass stuff shipped through a friend in the US to avoid this. Ugh!

Does this work only at border cities (and perhaps Toronto)? Many years ago, this happened to me, but I had to pay in Windsor where it crossed the border, and I live in Ottawa. Fortunately, I have family in that area so they took care of it for me.
