Upgrading to Savannah at check in - how much more would you pay?

I currently have a couple of pool-view bunk bed rooms for my family of 5 + 2, but was thinking of asking if one of the rooms could be upgraded to a savannah room (regular one, not a bunk) .

I know this is subjective, but how much would you be willing to pay to upgrade?

For reference, the room rate for a pool-view bunk bed room during our time of travel is $300, and the savannah view is $395.

For a while you could come on these boards and read posts about DIS'ers getting an upgraded room at check-in for a discount. Unfortunately, it's been a very long time since I've seen that. AKL used to be great for complimentary upgrades, but I think that's gone the way of the dinosaur as well. Especially since so many rooms have now been converted to DVC. Chances are that if the difference to upgrade now is $95 more per night, that's exactly what you'd pay at check-in, if they have any available. If it's something you really want, I'd suggest making the change now. If you're willing to take the chance, go for it, but I honestly wouldn't expect to see a discounted rate offered.

Can you upgrade for free if you ask the CM at the Check-In desk?:confused3

Keep the pool view.

That scenery is ever changing. I would much rather people watch. The savanah view was cool the first day or 2, but quickly got real old. It became the running joke..."look...a zebra"

Not worth the money in our view

We upgraded our room to a savannah view on our honeymoon in 2005. Our TA told us that on our honeymoon we would be assured not to have a view of the parking lot (as this was a big concern of mine before we left). Well we got there, checked in and went to our room- only to see a tiny balcony barely big enough to stand on and a lovely view of the parking lot. I lost my temper and called the TA and lit into them. Well the TA was anything but helpful and actually tried to turn the blame around on me. So after that fiasco, I went to the front desk, calmly explained my situation and said it was our honeymoon. They let us upgrade to one of the nicer rooms overlooking the savannah, but we had to pay the full amount. I didn't expect to get it for free.

I forgot how many hundreds of dollars the upgrade was, but to wake up every morning and have coffee and read the paper on your roomy balcony watching giraffe and zebra walk by, I wouldn't have had it any other way.

When we go back in October next year, I am contemplating going back to AKL and another savannah room.

I wonder if you request a certain room # (like what I had in 2005), if they would oblige and give that to you if it were available. Does anyone know or heard of a WDW resort doing this?

If I am asking for a Savannah view at check in, then I would be willing to pay the savannah view rate per night ($395). I wouldn't expect any discount...so I would be willing to pay $95 x # of nights...

How about at POFQ?
A good rule of thumb, if you have to ask, expect to pay. I know it sounds like a lot of people luck out with free upgrades, but it's really not a high percent and many are done prior to arrival and to benefit the resort. It's always best to book something you'll be happy with, as 99 out of 100 times, that's exactly what you'll get.

I have stayed in both and loved both. My pool view was an upgrade from a standard view and it was so relaxing, kind of like being in the Carribean, the Savannah view was over the top cool. We were on the main savannah and saw animals constantly. It is a tough choice but you can see animals from many viewing areas all over the lodge.

What are your travel dates. If it's off-peak (value season), you can get a free upgrade by simply asking. There will be alot of room as alot of people freaked out when someone said "they're closing animal kingdom due to construction in the lobby". Alot of people got scared and changed resorts. AKL is currently the only/easiest Deluxe to get an upgrade an no charge IMO.
