Upgrading to a Southern CA select AP during Christmas

Hi everyone. I have a reservation at the DLH for December 18th through the 21st (Sunday through Wednesday). I want to upgrade to a Southern California Select AP. My questions is this...do I need to buy a 4 day park hopper and not upgrade until the last day because of the blackout period? I am a little bummed to not get the dining discounts or be able to go to the AP area in California Adventure but this is my only option...correct?

Yes, that is correct, you need to wait until the last day to avoid the blockout dates. Sorry.

On a thread earlier this month, someone asked if guests could enter the parks that day if they renew their AP on a blockout day. So, it might be worth finding out if you can enter the park on the day you upgrade even if it's a blockout day for your new AP (I think you can, but I haven't personally tried it). At least then, you might be able to see the AP area in DCA and get the dining and shopping discounts on your last day.
