Upgrading tickets to an AP

I have a 4 day hopper that i have pre-purchased for my June 2018 trip and today have booked a trip for January 2019. I want to upgrade this to a Deluxe Passport but the first day of the June trip is a black out date (02jun).

Is it possible to use the ticket on the first day and then on the 03jun upgrade the ticket to a Deluxe passport and only pay the difference between a 4 day hopper and an Deluxe passport?

You can upgrade a ticket up until the last day of use. Basically: the ticket must still be valid.

So on a 4 day ticket, you have until the end of the 4th day of use.

And the official, in writing rule is you will pay the difference between what you originally paid and the Deluxe. Sometimes a discount is maintained and face value given, but not always.

As mentioned, yes, you can upgrade later/at any point before the end of the last day of the ticket. Your AP will be backdated to the first day of use on the ticket that is being upgraded. My understanding is that you can upgrade a ticket to an AP that is blocked out that day and there is a way you can still get in that day only. So if your first day is the only block out day on your whole trip it may be worth asking about this on your first day. I have not personally done this (upgraded on a block out day), though I have upgraded tickets to an AP several times with no issues.

The sooner you upgrade the sooner you will be able to use your AP discount so that's definitely something to keep in mind as well, as is your plans for MaxPass. If you do plan to purchase MP with your AP, that would be another reason to do it sooner than later. On a recent trip I upgraded on day 2 and was able to get credit for both days of MP purchase when I added it to my AP but folks here seem to report mixed results with getting credited for MP purchased on previous days (it was a non issue in my case but I was prepared to push it if needed since the AP is back dated to the first ticket use day you should get credit for MP purchased for that day too, IMO).

If you are planning to use your MM (DL: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays), do so on your first day, before you upgrade to your AP. APs do not get the MM privilege, so you would lose that if it is unused when you upgrade on 6/03. Technically, you could use your ticket to enter DL for your MM on the 2nd, then upgrade to an AP sometime before the end of the day -- especially if you have any TS meals or souvenir shopping planned. That way you could use your AP to get meal and merchandise discounts starting on the 2nd. (Always double check to make sure that your AP discount would apply at whichever restaurant or shop you go to.)
