If you booked your resort package with tickets before the Feb 22, 2015 ticket price increase, then you would only get the pre-increase price for your tickets in the upgrade process (you would owe the price increase). Using your tickets first elevates them to current gate price (called price-bridging) when calculating upgrade cost.

Am considering doing this if a good AP room discount comes out for our December trip. I suppose I could walk into the MK and right back out to a guest svc center?

You could do that, but each park has a Guest Relations station both inside and outside the entry gate(s). Inside MK, it's at City Hall (near the Fire House). Outside the gate, it's on the side closest to Contemporary Resort. On park maps, Guest Relations is shown as a blue box with a white "i" inside.
