I hear you guys talking about upgrades. My soon-to-be-wife and I are going on the Magic for our honeymoon in October. The best we could afford was a Cat 9, and was wondering if there is a chance for an upgrade. Any tips?

There is always a chance, but a slim chance.

It appears to be almost completely random. No one has found any relationship between special events and getting an upgrade. On anyone cruise their are dozens if not hundreds of honeymoons, birthdays, anniversaries etc. etc. etc.

All indications are that DCL provides upgrades if they need your room for someone else -- not as matter of course, nor in recognition of events such as a honeymoon, nor as a reward for early booking, repeat business, early payment, booking directly through DCL, paying by Disney Visa, or anything else.

There dosen't seem to be anything you can do to increase your chance of getting an upgarde, except for two things:
  • Book a lower category, such as 12, 11, 10, and, yes, even 9, simply because there are more staterooms to move up to.
  • Book a category GTY instead of a specific statroom number. By definition, you will get at least the category that you paid for. DCL may put you into a higher category if nothing opens up -- but DCL may also put you into the least desirable stateroom in the catgory that you paid for.

With the many posts about upgrades on this board, it seems upgrades are very common -- but, in reality they're very rare on DCL.

As I read someone else saying "Always pay for and book into the category that you're willing to accept at a minimum".

I'm getting MARRIED during the cruise and we didn't get upgraded from our Cat 11s!!!! Not to say that you won't get an upgrade, but dont be disappointed if you don;t get one.

On our honeymoon last Sept we didn't get an upgrade, but at check in the woman who checked us in saw the note on our reservations. We were in a cat 11 and the line to get on board was very long. She came around the counter and escorted us to the front of the line telling everyone "Here comes the bride and grrom!" It was such a great way to start our cruise.
