I've been scanning these boards for days and loving every minute! Thanks to all for the great info.

We are going on a 4 day Wonder cruise on Dec 6th and then staying in Orlando for 3 nights. I am torn between staying on Disney property at a Moderate or Value or staying offsite, preferably close to Downtown Disney, since we will only have a day or two at the parks, I don't want to waste too much time traveling back and forth. However, the free breakfast that the offsite hotels serve is very attractive. I know they are not the most expansive or elegant, but enough to get us out of the door and on our way.

I am hoping that Disney will extend the free dining program until December then it's a no brainer for me.

My real question is.... If I do decide to book a Moderate what is the likelihood of an upgrade to a Deluxe...if any at all??

Don't see many cases of people getting upgraded from a mod to a deluxe unless there is something wrong with the hotel their current reservation is in. For example people who had rooms early in the pirate rooms at CBR got upgraded to BC due to them not being ready yet.

I agree, it just does not happen that often. As far as staying outside the world it is not that far to most hotels. It is more a matter of choice. If you look at a unoffical guide to wdw they have a hole section of times to and from each hotel in and out of the world to each of the parks. This might help with your choice. Also Swan and Dolphin have a lot of specials that you might be eligable for.

Upgrades to a higher resort category do happen, but they are extremely rare, It's kind of like hitting the lottery.

As the PP said, they only happen in highly unusual situations, like rehabs that aren't finished.

Definitely not something you can count on..It happens rarely .Though it seems like on these boards that Disney gives out a lot of upgrades remember that Dis'ers represent a very tiny % of all disney go'ers. Most people never get them. I have never gotten any upgrade and I am going on my 22nd trip.

Upgrades from Mods to Deluxes rarely happen, it's not like on cruises where you can get upgrades in room categories.

That said, I have been upgraded twice. Once from ASSp to BWI, 2 rooms, upon check-in. This I believe was due to a floor or section of a floor of rooms having to be taken out of inventory b/c a pipe burst.

The second was in advance, upgrade from Pop to SSR (1 BR) because I think Pop got way over booked during free dining (we wound up canceling the trip for some reason I am not clear on right now; so I am not even sure if it was in fact during free dining, or just another time of year, 90% sure it was during free dining)

2 yrs ago during Free dining they WAY overbooked Pop and some of the values so they offered complimentary upgrades to SSR

I think just from a transportation perspective it is very attractive to stay at a WDW resort. Disney would take you from port to your resort and then from your resort to the airport. Or are you planning on renting a car anyway to get from port to your hotel?

Also, the Disney transport to the parks is very convenient...much more so than off-site shuttles. You also get the benefits of being an onsite resort guest (Magical Express, EMH, free Disney shuttles, etc), that I think far outweigh a free breakfast! We like to do a quick cereal or granola bar and a piece of fruit in the room and we're off.
