I really enjoyed using the nifty fifty last year at WDW, but I felt if it was just a bit faster I would have got more from it.

This year (breaking news :thumbsup2 ) I have just booked for Christmas YAY!!

We are going 3 weeks from Dec 8-Dec 30th. Ive been at this time of year a couple of times before and the weather can be a bit gloomy and obviously, it gets dark earlier than the summer, so Im thinking I'll be using my faster lenses even more! Im seriously considering trading in my f/1.8 for the f/1.4 - its about another $300 and Im wondering whether its worth it or not??

The alternative is to buy the 85mm f/1.8, which is a bit dearer - gives me more reach no more speed.

I intend to take my tripod for "static" shots - so Im happy to use slower lenses for that - the 50mm I found using for handheld stuff, like dark rides, Spectro and low light candids.

Any advice?? My camera is a Canon 30D by the way.

Allie :yay:

Have you thought about the Sigma 30mm f/1.4? Its a bit wider and might come in more handy around Disney. I also like using it as a general purpose lens. Because its wider than the 50mm it has a view more like that of the human eye.

Just something else to think about. :teeth:

I completely agree with Kyle on this one. The 30mm would be alot more useful at WDW, I think. I only had the 50mm f1.8 last year when I went and although it was great, I found myself needing something wider angle alot of times. So, I went and bought the 30mm f1.4 and so far I love it. I can see MANY uses for it at WDW, especially at the Spectromagic parade. If you get a good "seat" for the parade, you are really too close for effective use of the 50mm, but the 30mm should fit the bill perfectly, plus it is faster.

Hmm, thanks guys! Never considered that one. Its a bit pricier than the Canon 50mm f/1.4 but if I wait till Im in the US, it will be cheaper for me to buy it when I get there. That will be my Christmas present sorted then :D .

I agree with Andy & Kyle. My 50's been nifty and given me some low light shots I like but in May there were times I wanted a faster wider lens. A 30 1.4 would've been great. August I was happy with the lenses I had with me. Maybe because as you mentioned the light in August was better.
