OK now that we are getting more and more non disney pins put on PinPics by our members we are into new territory. Britt and I have decided to start 2 more websites. One will be for Olympic pins and the other will be everything else except Disney....

Now we need some input.

Olympic pins What different types are there? Do they make LE? Anyone know of a site that has a good explanation of Olympic pin types that I could do some research on?

WE HAVE GOTTEN A LOT OF GREAT INFO ON THE OLYMPIC AND HAVE TALKED TO SEVERAL VERY INFORMATIVE PEOPLE SO RIGHT NOW WE ARE SET ON THIS ONE.

Everything else...Here are the types that I can think of

Sports
Universal Studios
Sea World/Bush Gardens
Six Flags
Patriotic American
Patriotic Foreign
Buttons
LANDMARKS
LAWENFORCEMNT/FIREFIGHTERS
OM (ODYSSEY OF THE MIND)
MCDONALD'S
RESTAURANTS (OTHER)

Hard Rock Cafe will also be seperate from the others because evidently there are as many of these as there are Disney..HEHE

Ok that is all I can think of and this is where we need your help here. What other types can you think of?

Now comes the neat part. All three sites will blend together in the Trade Assitant. And each will continue the numbering system of PinPics reg. site. So you can do them and trade Olympic for Disney or whatever you want. This is only an option of course you don't have to trade that way but for those that want to they can...

OK WE ARE DOING GREAT AND GETTING SOME REALLY WONDERFUL INFO HERE... THANKS GUYS...

Olympic pin trading is probably the biggest type of pin collecting on this planet.

They definitely have LEs. Cheappins sent out an email just today about some LE500 Olympic pins offered by NBC (the network).

There are also LEs in the non-Olympic pinworld too. My company did a special pin for people who worked as volunteers for one of the presidential inaugurations. I can't remember the edition size, but it was pretty low, definitely under 1000.

Cheappins can give you category info.
Pinfever.com has more general info too.
I think both sites belong to the pincollectors web ring. That should lead you to many more sites.

Good luck. Hope to see you again. . . someday.

And you think Disney has lots of pins... try McDonald's pins.

Ther are TONS of those and may even be able to get 2 of the biggest McD traders to contribute alot of pics to the site.

Robyn is correct. Olympic pin trading is several orders of magnitude larger than Disney pin trading. Personally, I just began Olympic trading a year ago and I already have well over a thousand pins. Besides the sheer number of pins, the categories are also varied even with the games. There are indeed limited editions within Olympic pins but edition size is not the same type of indicator as with Disney. In my dealings with Olympic pin dealers, they are less hung up on what the edition size is and more to its tradeability given a subject matter. As an example, the Salt Lake City games most popular and tradeable pins are actually what Disney collectors would classify as common rack pins. Because of the subject though, these rack pins trade for what in Disney terms would be an LE100. Although Cheappins does have Olympic pins, it probably isn't a good indication of the categories as they have most of their pins grouped by year. I know as I began to get into the Olympic pin trading, I found the groupings most often mentioned as:
  • Winter/Summer Olympics by Year
  • Law Enforcement/Security Pins
  • Specific Events
  • Local Culture/Theme (for example the Salt Lake games have a series of pins depicting Utah foods)
  • NOC (National Olympic Committees)
  • Olympic Sponsors
  • Transportation
  • Paraolympics
  • Venues
  • Olympic Bid Pins
  • Countdown Pins
  • Torch Relay Pins

There is a site PinFever.com that has a wealth of information including the PinFever Times which is the bible of Salt Lake City Olympic pins.

One other category of other (non-Disney and non-Olympic) pin category would be travel. I know I have many pins in my collection that I have gotten as a result of visiting some location. As a sub-set of that, there are ski pins that most of the major ski resorts produce for skiers to wear on their hats or jackets.

Good luck...

That is great thanks guys. Keep it coming. Actually once the database is set up Britt's and My job are pretty much done. I am not going to be the one adding all the pins to the database and I will probably get moderators for those databases that know a lot about Olympic pins...HEHE As I won't know if the info is incorrect or not... LOL

So origin of the olympic pins would basically be where the Olympics were held that year right? Do they have a lot of pins which are produced every year and would be considered multiple origin? How far back did they start doing Olympic pins? Those are great Catagories Jeff and very helpful. Britt is really really excited about this. He has all kinds of idea on what to do. And how to blend the sites.

On the other side of the coin Ski pins would fall under sports as well as basketball and hockey, etc..... McDonald's pins def. deserve their own origin and I will add that to the my list. I am sure this will take some weeks to set up but before you know it will be up and running...

Correction -- Figgy is excited. Britt is holding his head in his hands and thinking about the impact this has on the software.

And I'm thinking that it won't be separate sites so much as interest groups. You could access it as separate sites, but most folks will configure their user profile to indicate what classes of pins they're interested in, and you'll only ever see those. There's still a bit more thought needed.

Okay, maybe I'm a little excited. :)

WOW!!! :earseek:

I collect Hard Rock Cafe pins, and there are TONS of these. There are also trading communities for Hard Rock pins out there.

I would love to see this site completed. Also, there is a big community of Nascar pin collectors out there.

My DS#2 actually began our family's entire pin collecting interest with non-Disney pins. I began bringing back pins from every city I visited on business trips. So we have lots of city, state, tourist spots, national parks, etc. pins.

From one of my friends who is an olympic pin collector . . . I understand that pins from certain olympics are more valuable because there were less pins manufactured, or less pins traded because of unusual circumstances. The one she mentoned (that I remember) is Atlanta. Once that bomb went off, contact among athletes and among athletes and spectators, and even general mingling of spectators was dramatically constrained. This reduced everyone's ability to trade. Consequently, pins tended to go home with their original owners, and trading for Atlanta pins is therefore hotter than other olympics.

I think we're just about at the limit of my olympic pin knowledge.

If someone is interested in Salt Lake City pins . . . I can purchase Bank of America (sponsor) pins. Send a PM or email if you are interested.

The area of pin collecting that we are familiar with is from Odyssey of the Mind (OM) World Final competitions. Our children have been involved with OM creative problem competitions for over 10 years and have traded pins with other kids from all around the world. Every state and most countries that compete have their own uniqie pins that the kids bring with them to the World Finals and trade over the course of the four day event. My kids have quite an impressive collection of OM pins, since every year there are different pins to trade. The states usually come up with some sort of theme for their pins (and t-shirts) and sometimes there are multi-part pins, sort of like puzzle pieces. An example of some OM pins, from Virginia of course, can be found at the following web site:
VA OM Pins
I would love to see a site dedicated to OM pins. The URL for the national OM organization is www.odysseyofthemind.org
Good Luck, Figgy!

OM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

James, you just made my day. I competed in OM for five years from 1984 through 1988. We were lucky enough to get to World Finals every year, and we won 2nd place in 1987 and finally WON IT ALL in 1988!!! These are some of the fondest memories of my life, and you can BET my kids are gonna do it if they want to.

Then I was a judge for three more years, basically through college. What times.

Anyway, thanks for reminding me! I have several OM pins from when it was Olympics of the Mind before the Olympic Committee went nuts and threatened to sue everyone. In fact, pins used to be the award for placing at the Regional and State level at that time.

Now I'm gonna have to dig those things up. I'm giddy. :)

Sue Ellen, where do you get your HR pins? Online? Also, I would love to see/trade the Universal pins. That's just my $.02 worth

I have been collecting all sorts of pins since Jr. High--(but I guess until the Atlanta Olympic Pin fever thing hit I never really thought of it as collecting!) I started with ski resort pins and have at leat one pin from every place I have ever skiied. It grew to rock group pins that I would buy with my allowance from flea market vendors. I even have a colleciton of name badges from every place I have ever worked that required me to wear a name badge (from McDonalds to Jewlecor to JCPENNEY!). I have a small collection from the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. that is when I got into the trading and whole collectibility of the pins I owned. I tried to get my hands mostly on Sponsor pins and LE pins (like the gold coke bottle!). Now I focus mostly on Disney pins but I have taken to getting a pin everywhere I go on vacation these days (or even for work if it takes me to a new city/airport I have never been to). My newest thing is getting pins at every microbrewery DH and I visit. It seems no matter where we travel he hunts down the local microbrewery--since I am not much of a drinker these days--I pick up a pin!!!! Good luck with your database!! it seems like an overwhelming task but your fans will be much appreciateive!!!

Oh my:earseek: it's not me. Really!! I'm so new here! I got started becausewe just got back from WDWand then the fever hit!! I'm just a collector just like you, even though you won't admit it!! Afraid of becoming just like the rest of us? Pinaholics!! Anyway, I'm in good ole' St.Louis and we do have a microbrewery here, maybe a couple. Do you think they would have pins? If you want me to, I'll check into it for you (maybe score myself a couple, too:D . let me know!!

Our pin collection began with "vest" pins from motorcycle events around the country and expanded from there.

In additon to our disney pins we have a seperate map board on the wall with pins from various cities, the state and national parks, and festivals and events that we have visited on the motorcycle. We even have a seperate little framed piece for the Harley dealers around the country that we have visited on the bikes. (Yes, most Harley dealers have individual store pins, some of which are really beautiful)

One of my favorite pins is the Hard Rock Cafe Black Bear pin from Gatlinburg, Tenn that I bought this summer on our motorcycle trip through the Smokies. Much to my DH's regret, I'm now becoming more and more interested in Hard Rock Cafe pins !!!

It seems that every where you look in our house there are pins hanging on the walls, on top of the tables, scattered around the computer...well, you get the picture.:D

Hey, do you trade? How do you acquire ALL your pins? sounds like you have a massive collection. That's interesting, since my recent addition to Disney pins, I dug up two HRC (Hard Rock Cafe it shall be known as hereout:rolleyes: ) from my drawer. A Guitar from Toyko and a set of drums from the same. My DH travels alot, now in Germany in fact, I'm sure he'll be happy to pick up pins for me. he loves to visit HRC's so it wouldn't be a problem. Let me know. He's all over the worlk, Singapore, Italy, Korea, Guam, Australia, not to mention in this country as well. I worry about him alot with all this traveling business. :( In fact, we have a HRC here in St. Louis. Am going now to take DS to Union Station here, they have a DS!!! Must run, will check back later.

When my youth soccer teams go to tournaments most of the teams trade patches from their club. On a rare (too rare for me!) occaison a team will trade a pin instead of a patch. Most tournaments gives each participant a gift. Sometimes it is a pin. Not enough pin and or interest to dedicte a website too but if anyone is interested in this sort of pin e-mail me as I have a couple of extras and would love to trade.

This is a pin from a soccer tournament a couple of towns over from me. I designed the character, TWISTer, but did not design the pin.

TWISTer.jpg

I get most of my Hard Rock pins from the different Cafe's that I have visited. I have purchased some online, and have traded for a LOT of them.

For reasons I can't explain . . . we have four Looney Tunes Christmas pins.

I am definitely not a Looney Tunes fan.

I'd be happy to trade them for Disney pins. . . . of which I am definitely a fan. :D

Would love to see your Looney Tunes pin, maybe you can scan htem and e-mail me? I also visited my St. Louis HRC today. Got $38.00 in pins!! Would like to trade those for something other than what I have. also my DH travels all over the world and can pick up HRC pins, too. I have some from Tokyo, Singapore, Guam (of all places), and more. I like them too, but wish they would do a little more with them than quitars which seems to be primarily what they have, although I do have a Tokyo with drums which is prettydifferent. I got a cool Halloween HRC pin today, also a Breast cancer pin, it's a white guitar with pink. And I would LOVE to see more Islands of Adventure Orlando pins, wish I would have gotten more when I was there.

Would you please tell me where you go on-line to trade your Hard Rock pins?
