Update on the boys' surgeries...

Hey all!

I just wanted to pop in and let you all know that both boys got through their surgeries today with flying colors! For those that didn't know, they both had their adenoids removed and tubes in their ears. Yes, we did them roughly back to back! I should take up sky diving now!

The roughest portion was coming up from anesthesia, that was rough for both of them. Other than that we have been sleeping off and on all day, and they have eaten their fair share of Popsicles and Sprite. They have held down their dinner (PB & J and some SunChips), but they are doing great and watching Cars right now.

I think it was rougher on Mom and Dad than it was on the boys! We both passed out as soon as they did this afternoon and are just coming to. I had a terrible time sleeping last night thinking of all that could go wrong.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and well wishes! It truly meant so much to me to be so well supported here. Hopefully now we will see some improvement in the boys overall!

Surgery is rough on mom and dads, DS7 has had 8 surgeries...so I understand. It is never easy.

DS5 has been sick and the doctor mentioned getting the tonsils and adnoids (sp) out I was not happy.

just happen to come across your news. So sorry to hear the kids had to endure surgery. It sounds like all went pretty well I remember when we were told that my daughter may need similar surgery, I was speechless and all I could think of was how do I protect her and talk to her without scaring her. Luckily for us, after may evals, our doc opted to wait it out.

Glad it went well. You were very brave to take on everything at once close enough right?). We did the ear tubes last summer. DD handled it much better than I. Actually she was more prepared than an adult who was also waiting for surgery in the OR waiting area. I want to trade my imagination for a 6 year old imagination!

The doctor was telling us in the preliminary tests that the boys had as much as a 35% hearing loss before this procedure. My youngest son has a severe speech delay that we think may be partially caused by the fact that he has been carrying fluid around in those ears for awhile. Not that this will be a cure all, we still have a long row to hoe, but it should help him hear at least what he should be saying. Parker, my eldest, somehow developed speech and verbal before the fluid got behind his ear drum. So he can speak but has a tough time paying attention and taking verbal cues. So overall I think this is a good step forward.

The only thing I am worried about is the fact that we could end up doing this again, and again, and again. One lady who was working with us yesterday said her son required 8 sets of tubes.

Hopefully they won't have to go through the procedure again and you'll have nothing but positive results. Surgery is always scary...but it sounds like they made it through with flying colors!

Big !! Glad to hear that they are doing good. Coming out of that anesthesia can be a bear and very scary for a parent to watch.

Smal FYI - You might find that your boys will startle at noises and noises that used to not bother them might since they will start hearing things a lot clearer.

Hopefully they will only need one set of tubes. My youngest had one set when he was around 18 months old and here it is almost 18 months later and he hasn't needed another set. (knock on wood)

Good luck with with the tubes. We did tubes with DS7 two years ago, he showed significant hearing loss in one ear.

I wont tell you how long the tube lasted in the bad ear - or the good ear. We decided we didn't notice enough of a difference to go and do them again. He passed the last hearing test...so we are hoping that the one was all he needed or needs.
