About 10 months ago I came on here and vented while asking for suggestions during one of the toughest parenting challenges I'd ever encountered. Well, Senior year has passed and DS has successfully graduated with a NYS Regents Diploma. It was not an easy road, and I was holding my breath until the last second. He was planning on working full time because he knew he hosed up his chances at a decent school. On Friday he told me to fill out a FAFSA form as he was not going to work full time he was going to go to Community College. He will be paying his own way.
So for those of you who helped me to be tough, lock him out--which was the hardest thing I've ever done, don't let him drive the car, don't give him any money, etc. THANK YOU! I doubt that any one of these things made a difference in and of themselves, but in tandem they really helped with keeping him on track.
Because I know my son very well, I know if he does not pay for it himself he will not be fully invested in the outcome.

, it is the whole package of ToughLove and I know firsthand just how hard it is to dole that out, locking the doors and all....
