Hello,
I usually lurk but have had such a horrid week I just needed to share it with someone and vent..... if I were you I would go get that glass of wine now.. this could be long!!
I work in a little shop that sells cat novelties in fact the whole shop is dedicated to just the image of the cat ( and a tad bit of dog they popped upstairs). We had a staff meeting 2 weeks ago and was told that the shop takings were slowly going down hill and we have 4 months to turn it around before 'drastic actions' happen.

Well, fast forward to Thursday, though it was my day off I stopped by the shop at closing as my co worker Lyn, and I go out for a drink. She rang through the figures as normal but then her voice changed and looked at me as she was talking to the owner which is a clear sign that they were talking about me or someting to do with me.
Well, cutting to the chase, they asked if she wanted to work extra hours but to the best of my knowledge there are no extra hours to be had as we each work one day a week by ourselves and only double up on a saturday ( i work 4 days, lyn, 3 and petal 1), so we were wracking our brains trying to figure out where the extra hours are coming from and have come to the conclusion that one of us must be going an I assumed it must be me as I work the most hours. It was the only logical explanation as they would not even fork out £15.00 for new window display materials recently as there was no available money, so there could be no money for extra hours and plus the shop is sooo slow during the week it does not warrant 2 people working.

On friday lyn rings to put herself foreword for the hours and also wants to know what it is all about, what is going on etc... the owner is VERY vague and avoids her questions at every turn, she tells him that I am concerned and he says I should ring him so I do and I ask him what is happening and again he avoids questions at every turn... lots of.. blah blah.. looking to the future... blah blah.. at a planning stage.. blah blah... not prepared to mention anything at this time... blah.

I swear the man should have been a politician with all the side stepping he was doing! 4 long days pass with no word and I am starting to get slightly miffed, I know I only work part time but I still need to make December Disney plans and I cannot make any future payments to VIrgin Holidays If I do not have a job. So today at work I was told he and I are having a meeting this thursday, I mentioned to what the content of this meeting is so I could prepare mentally, if anything else, and again he was sooo vague so I thought for certain I must be getting the chop.

The afternoon flies by and whenever I thought about this meeting on his terms and all his evasive comments I was getting even more miffed so much so that at the end of the day when I phoned my figures through i told him I was not happy with these plans he was making behind my back... and that I should know what is going on especially if it concens job losses for any of us and again his comments were soooo blah... blah.. avoiding question... blah and then I got angry and caused a scene down the phone, he said I had better be careful as I was making him lose his temper (like the Hulk, No doubt) and he refused to do any business on the phone saying I would have to wait until Thursday.

Now I feel like a complete fool as the owners both know I am mild mannered and easy going kind of girl, I seldom, if ever, raise my voice, and now I am certain he thinks I am psychotic . If my job was not on the line (I do still think it is) it certainly will be now!! and overall I feel like such a fool and I have to meet him on thursday...if the ground could just open up right below me, right about now, that would be good!!

best get to the job centre tomorrow.... :guilty:

Well, if it is about cutting your hours, or you completely...then the upside is that it seems like a nearly bankrupt biz anyway, and will probably close in the near future anyhow.

So yes, this may just be the shove you needed to go out and find a BETTER job, with lots of benefits and less passive/aggressive employers.

Hope it all turns out for the best.

I'm so sorry to hear about your news, I hope that everything goes well at your meeting tomorrow, but I know it is very difficult to work and not worry when there is something hanging over you.

Good luck for tomorrow

Good luck for tomorrow but coloradobelle is right, this may be an opportunity for you to get out (with severance pay) and get a job that you'd really fancy, get yourself down to the local travel agents and ask if there are any jobs for a Disney enthusiast!! or perhaps take the time to retrain and just do some pub work or something to pay the bills, you never know this may be the best thing thats ever happened to you!! :wizard: pixie dust in the meantime

Good luck! I hope it all works out for you :)

I was dreading today... really dreading it, when he showed up I did apologise for my unprofessional behaviour and then he got straight down to it.. they are cutting my days from 4 days to 2 days and what peeves me completely is that my colleague lyn is picking up one of my days.

I have done everything for that shop, it was in such a state when I took it over and now it runs perfectly and they want to put a woman in charge who has not worked for 30 years and could not merchandise herself out of a paper bag.

it is not Lyn's fault, she did not ask for any of this, but yet I am slightly peeved.

Thank you for all of your best wishes, it really did help today!!
Cheers!
Ella

Ella i'm really sorry to hear whats happening to you. Its not fair how your being treated. If it was me i would look for a new job.

Employers these days seem to expect blood and give very little in return. Get a new job and then tell them what you think of them!! Good luck!! :sunny:

They can't give your hours to someone else. Many small business owners are ignorant of employment law or hope their employees will be. I suggest you make an appointment with a Solicitor who specialises in that area. Most will charge a reasonable fee for a consultation. Even if you decide not to take it any further, at least you will be informed of your rights. Or the Citizens Advice Bureau may be able to help.

Good idea - some solicitors offer free advice at C.A.B. Even if you don't want to work for the shop any more you can show them you won't be messed with - and it might help other employees in future.

Thank you All!!!

I will be most definitely looking into this as I admittedly I do not have a clue about employment law, this is most definitely worth pursuing!

Cheers for everything!!! :flower:
