bone spurs. I Finally found a walk in clinic that I could get into and the xray place was right next door. The tech looked at it and said, well unofficially you have a bone spur, looks like a little hook, kinda creepy actually. I probably won't see a family DR before Jan so any insight or help would be greatly appreciated.

Any online seach I do say to do the same stretches that you would do for PF?

Any one have this experience? Anything I can do? Do they go away on their own or do I have it for life??? Sorry for all the questions but won't get to see DR for quite a while with the holidays.

Thanks

Actually no. I think Dr Scholl's has a heal insert that cushions the heal better. That should take the pressure off the spurs - maybe. If you find one get a 6 miler or so in a couple times to see how they fit/work

You really do not have much option between now and the race other than to gut it out.

Thanks Charles for the link.

I know in myheart I have to just do it but my head was hoping for a miracle cure.....lol

I am just glad that I had not chipped a bone or something.

Thanks as always for the great insight!!!!

Kim - You might take a look at these too. I bought these a couple of years ago on the recommendation of our Galloway group leader when I was suffering from really bad PF. They may not have cured the problem, but they did help relieve some of the pain. According to their website, they're good for spurs too.

Good luck!

Kimmer...

Like I said on FB, I have suffered PF in both feet. As my podiatrist explained the pulling of the facia under the foot caused the spur. They are kinda one in the same. I think one you have the little spur (its the bone's response) it will always be there. I was told there are some procedures to "get rid" of the spur, like surgery, something like a pulsing thing that is suppose to help break it down and such. But, usually they try to treat it with stretching, icing, anti-inflammatories. Then they may try Physical therapy with ultrasound. electric stem to try and get the inflammation down and more stretchin, massage and strengthening of the surrounding muscles.

It is one of those things that just takes time. Sometime even after having been treat for PF over a year or so ago for the last foot, I still get some twinges here and there. I always try to roll my foot on a golf or tennis ball in the morning before getting out of bed. Its just the pressure of the weight on our feet over and over again. When you then sit for awhile and then go to move again, it usually kills!!!!

Good luck and hang in there!! If it is PF/heel spurs then it will take time to heal. Rest is good for it, so when you can put the feet up and ice them. Stretch when you can.

Hi Kim!

I don't have any insight or advice, but just wanted to offer you a  and a heaping dose of pixiedust: !

I hope I see you at the Pop Meet!

Maria :upsidedow

Thanks Tracey!!!!!

Hi Maria!!! How are you??? Look forward to seeing you soon!!!!

Kimmer, when I retired from the Air Force in 1994 I had heel spurs on both heels. It's from friction. A spur is basicly a callus on your bone from friction, just like if you lft weights for a while without wearing lifting gloves you will get callus on your palms.

That was the reason I took off for 7 years from exercising. I had been putting in 50+ miles a week in the Las Vegas desert and my poor feet and body in general were worn out. I didn't need to take off nearly that long but once out of the habit it's hard to get back on the wagon.

The stretching and the cushioning heel cups will help as will the ice and of course sleeping well. You only heal when you sleep so you have a perfect reason to sleep longer now.

As far as continuing to exercise, well my PT department had me stretching regularly and wearing well cushioned shoes. I had some soft gel inserts and I completed a grouling race in the 120 degree heat called the Peace Keeper Challenge, where elite special forces from all over the world would compete at Nellis AFB. It wasn't quite as long as the Goofy but it was an adventure race across the desert and up to Mt Charleston. I was on the Nellis team that was hosting the event for Nato countries as part of the Red Flag exercises. But long story short I made without to much discomfort from the heels and didn't do any more damage to them.

Good luck dear friend.

Kim: When I had both Achilles surgeries, they removed bone spurs causing me issues. Hopefully they will come and pass like Dave, and not need surgery.

Thanks Dave and Robert. Who thought that little thing I seen on the xrays could be causing me such pain. Oh well I think this is what they call a "gut check" and with the support of all my friends I will get across that finish line.

Hope you both had a great Christmas!!!!!

DH had bone spurs - and he eventully had surgery - lots of good advice from others - I also have PF and the inserts really help - that and the rolling of the tennis ball - and I freeze a water bottle, and roll my foot on that after a run - stretching before and after...

right now I'm "unofficially" suffering from
Trochanteric Bursitis serious hip pain - not sure IF I can recover by the Half. I'm extremely freaking out!

Sorry to hear about your "unofficial" injuries, Kim and Sandy. I unofficially have a bone spur on the top of my foot below the big toe (first metatarsal) and a tendon that's rubbing against it. I asked my podiatrist husband what the worst case scenario was (since I'm going to attempt the full anyway), and he said, "Well the tendon could rupture and start rolling up your foot, :scared1: but it won't be painful and you could probably still walk on it." So if any of you hear a scream of horror/revulsion during the full, and then see a Team in Training participant with the weirdest stride imaginable, that will be me.
