Saturday afternoon, DS12 calls me to come pick him up. As he gets in the minivan, he points out the ugly scrape he got on his knee and mentions "oh yeah, I hurt my thumb too." He continues to complain about how much his scrape hurts, while I inspect his blue and swollen right thumb (courtesy of a kick from his umm....."friend"). Not a doubt in my mind that it's broken. A trip to the ER and some x-rays confirm this, they apply a temporary cast, and DS starts to mourn the loss of at least half of his 7th grade football season. :sad1:

Fast forward to Monday afternoon. My cell phone rings as I'm preparing to pick up DS from school. Athetics is his final period and while he knew he couldn't participate, he chose to suit out to walk out onto the field with the other boys. Back to the phone call....it's the middle school trainer. That can't be good. As he tells me that DS slipped and fell backwards while walking to the field, my first thought is "oh no, he's done more damage to his thumb."

Trainer: we think his arm is broken.
Me: Oh no! He already has a broken thumb, now he's broken the arm too?
Trainer: No m'am........it's his left arm.

At this point I'm positive this is just a cruel joke, but I can't come up with anyone I know that would do this.

Of course the x-rays show a very clean, very distinct diagonal break of the humerus. DS now has a new splint and sling on the left to coordinate with his thumb on the right. Yesterday's visit to the orthopedic surgeon was fairly positive. No surgery needed unless the bones won't stay aligned. We'll be x-raying the arm frequently to keep an eye on things.

DS is very upset over the loss of his entire football season now...but this doesn't bother him nearly as much as his new dependence on his family and friends to do things for him. Like brushing his teeth....washing his hair...putting on his shirt (over the sling)...and the (don't tell anyone :earseek: ) sponge bath.

The whole thing is just so unbelievable to me, I had to share. We're trying to help him keep his sense of humor in spite of all the difficulty and disappointment. It's either laugh or cry.

Just think, you can use this episode as a method of blackmail in future years. "If you don't do xxxx, I am going to tell your friends that I gave you sponge baths when you were 12!"

I wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry either! Yikes!

omgoodness, the poor guy! this will be one school year he'll never forget!

Poor Guy! :(

This reminds of a friend from high school that broke his leg skiing and then fell down the stairs on his crutches and brokes his arm.

Aww. Poor guy. Give him extra hugs from your DIS friends. And then get out the camera and take his picture for posterity. It can be one of the "remember when" photos you display at his HS graduation.

Poor guy. This sounds just a little too coincidental to me 2 broken bones in such a short period of time. I would investigate this a little more. I know accidents happen in sports but that is a little strange.

If it makes you feel any better my cousin and boyfriend are the same way and they're 22 and 26. My cousin injured himself CONSTANTLY his whole childhood and it wasn't that he was very adventurous, trouble always seemed to find him. My boyfriend broke his kneecap last year because he was testing a new dirt bike track some of his younger cousins had made and crashed through a fence. A month later one of his friends was playing around and threw a weird looking fish with spikes coming out of it at my boyfriend while they were at the beach and it infected his entire right arm where the spikes went through his skin. Then he calls me last year while I'm at WDW and says he fell on a tape measure that was out and it sliced off his finger and had to have it reattached. And all of this was just last year. They know him by name at the emergency room. Some kids are just born with a "trouble" cloud over them unfortunately.

Oh, poor kid. Sounds like me, fromt he time I was 11 to 15 I was just one accident after another. I got to know the ER staff very well. Something about the ackward years that tend to make kids clumsy. Give him and extra hug from the Dis and tell him to be careful. :goodvibes

Oh that poor kid. That is just awful to have both arms involved. Give him a hug for us and sending pixie dust to him.

Poor kid :grouphug: I hope he heals quickly and his luck turns around.

Poor kid. I would buy him a tape recorder for school so he can record lectures, etc. at school and then he can orally do his homework into the recorder at home. It will make his life, and yours, a lot easier.

I think it is time for a new boyfriend. If you get married and have kids, think of all the ER visits you will have to make! ;)

That's a good idea, and one I hadn't thought of. I know we have a small one around here somewhere. His principal has been very accomodating. He told us they would have someone transcribe for Josh, he's allowed to leave class 5 minutes early (with a helper) so that he can get to class without the risk of being bumped in the hallway chaos, and he may be out of dress code so he can wear athletic shorts since he can't button/zip. Today is his first day back since breaking his arm, so hopefully we'll get a good report on the day when he gets home.

Thanks to all for the sympathy and well wishes!

Sending a big hug to that young fella! Hope it heals quick!
