Just when we thought the worst was over:( my own 3 kids go to school in the same town where I work. It was just announced that there will be more cuts in the secondary school, where my 2 oldest go, specifically fewer teachers for more kids-projected avg. class size 27 kids.....they are scaling back all the sports programs including closing down the pool that both the H.S. and Junior H.S. use. Plus my hours have been cut on paper, but I will still be expected to be at school for the same # of hrs I am now-I just won't get paid for them:mad: So next year I will be working harder for possibly less money (the selectboard is trying to take away our contracted raises including step raises). sorry I just had to vent. I guess I should be thankful that I still have a job. I think the thing that bugs me the most is that we're being told that we'll only be paid for being in the building a certain number of hrs even though its expected that we will be in the building for more:mad:

This makes no sense to me....here in Boston they are proposing freezing all salaries...another 10% cut (now I am really in trouble)in teacher work force, closing 5 school, but opening three new ones  The worse part...they are saying our class sizes will be increased to about 34 per class. If that happens in my school it will be a mess. We have an open space school with classrooms made for 20 students :(

I asked DH to start looking South I want to leave :( :(

I know in Texas that teachers have been expected to put in more and more with less and less. It is SOO frustrating. No wonder we are losing so many good teachers.

DH is a magistrate and there is all kinds of talk of closing courts. Lucky for us his is not one of them but the work from one will go to him....Our town can not even make minimum funding for our schools and is fined by the state...oh what a mess.

guys Im right here along with ya

My town library job will definately be affected - talks of the library only being open 3days per week. We are a rather large library, lots of surrounding towns come to us. So that means for me going from 34 (already lost 1hr) to 21hrs.

There is talk of the schools going to 4days and the classes having up to 40kids in each class. Do we start homeschooling?

Dont know when anyone will know anything either. How do we plan for the future? Do I sign DS up for summer camp and then pull him if I find Im only working 3days/wk? And you must remember that rescheduled cruise for Nov? We may get on the ship but not afford to get off at the ports. Trying to stockup, pay off whatever we can right now before the ---- hits the fan in June (new fiscal year)

Good luck everyone

It's no better in California. The schools here were screaming for teachers, so all these young people got their teaching credentials - they'll be the first laid off. And there aren't other jobs out there for college grads!
I work in an office at a school, and I'll be looking at job retraining to go back to hospital/clinic work.
(this is a state that a budget surplus just a few years ago - it's discouraging that a State can't plan for "down times" any better than families!)

It's HORRIBLE here too. :( The state is $47 billion in debt and the education cuts look to be huge. We may lose music in our school, go back to larger class sizes and lose all sorts of other extras. It's really a very sad situation and incredibly frustrating.

Ohio isn't much better. Our governor wanted to add sin taxes and other things, but the legislature said no...so what can he do without their permission? Cut school funding! Not only does this affect me (as a teacher) and my kids (going into K, 3rd and 6th grade) now, but being able to afford college for them looks more and more like a pipe dream. They'll have to get loans until they're 40!!!
How are things in Florida? I'm not kidding actually--last summer I talked to some teachers when we were there and they said they was a big need for teachers--I think college is more affordable too than it is in Ohio (5th most expensive public schools in the US I believe). I know Celebration is opening a new HS. Maybe it's time to pull up stakes! But if it's just as bad there I'll stick it out here.
