It takes an especially weak human to write something like this, or rather, it takes someone with (in my opinion) remarkably twisted and poisoned philosophy. But he's getting slammed for it in the national news as we speak ... so I can't be alone in that opinion! This appeared in the Univ of Massachusetts student newspaper, written by a poli sci grad student from Puerto Rico.

Pat Tillman is not a hero: he got what he deserved

by Rene Gonzalez
April 28, 2004

When the death of Pat Tillman occurred, I turned to my friend who was watching the news with me and said, "How much you want to bet they start talking about him as a 'hero' in about two hours?" Of course, my friend did not want to make that bet. He'd lose. In this self-critical incapable nation, nothing but a knee-jerk "He's a hero" response is to be expected.

I've been mystified at the absolute nonsense of being in "awe" of Tillman's "sacrifice" that has been the American response. Mystified, but not surprised. True, it's not everyday that you forgo a $3.6 million contract for joining the military. And, not just the regular army, but the elite Army Rangers. You know he was a real Rambo, who wanted to be in the "real" thick of things. I could tell he was that type of macho guy, from his scowling, beefy face on the CNN pictures. Well, he got his wish. Even Rambo got shot in the third movie, but in real life, you die as a result of being shot. They should call Pat Tillman's army life "Rambo 4: Rambo Attempts to Strike Back at His Former Rambo 3 Taliban Friends, and

Gets Killed."

But, does that make him a hero? I guess it's a matter of perspective. For people in the United States, who seem to be unable to admit the stupidity of both the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars, such a trade-off in life standards (if not expectancy) is nothing short of heroic. Obviously, the man must be made of "stronger stuff" to have had decided to "serve" his country rather than take from it. It's the old JFK exhortation to citizen service to the nation, and it seems to strike an emotional chord. So, it's understandable why Americans automatically knee-jerk into hero worship.

However, in my neighborhood in Puerto Rico, Tillman would have been called a "pendejo," an idiot. Tillman, in the absurd belief that he was defending or serving his all-powerful country from a seventh-rate, Third World nation devastated by the previous conflicts it had endured, decided to give up a comfortable life to place himself in a combat situation that cost him his life. This was not "Ramon or Tyrone," who joined the military out of financial necessity, or to have a chance at education. This was a "G.I. Joe" guy who got what was coming to him. That was not heroism, it was prophetic idiocy.

Tillman, probably acting out his nationalist-patriotic fantasies forged in years of exposure to Clint Eastwood and Rambo movies, decided to insert himself into a conflict he didn't need to insert himself into. It wasn't like he was defending the East coast from an invasion of a foreign power. THAT would have been heroic and laudable. What he did was make himself useful to a foreign invading army, and he paid for it. It's hard to say I have any sympathy for his death because I don't feel like his "service" was necessary. He wasn't defending me, nor was he defending the Afghani people. He was acting out his macho, patriotic crap and I guess someone with a bigger gun did him in.

Perhaps it's the old, dreamy American thought process that forces them to put sports greats and "larger than life" sacrificial lambs on the pedestal of heroism, no matter what they've done. After all, the American nation has no other role to play but to be the cheerleaders of the home team; a sad role to have to play during conflicts that suffer from severe legitimacy and credibility problems.

Matters are a little clearer for those living outside the American borders. Tillman got himself killed in a country other than his own without having been forced to go over to that country to kill its people. After all, whether we like them or not, the Taliban is more Afghani than we are. Their resistance is more legitimate than our invasion, regardless of the fact that our social values are probably more enlightened than theirs. For that, he shouldn't be hailed as a hero, he should be used as a poster boy for the dangerous consequences of too much "America is #1," frat boy, propaganda bull. It might just make a regular man irrationally drop $3.6 million to go fight in a conflict that was anything but "self-defense." The same could be said of the unusual belief of 50 percent of the American nation that thinks Saddam Hussein was behind Sept. 11. One must indeed stand in awe of the amazing success of the American propaganda machine. It works wonders.

Al-Qaeda won't be defeated in Afghanistan, even if we did kill all their operatives there. Only through careful and logical changing of the underlying conditions that allow for the ideology to foster will Al-Qaeda be defeated. Ask the Israelis if 50 years of blunt force have eradicated the Palestinian resistance. For that reason, Tillman's service, along with that of thousands of American soldiers, has been wrongly utilized. He did die in vain, because in the years to come, we will realize the irrationality of the War on Terror and the American reaction to Sept. 11. The sad part is that we won't realize it before we send more people like Pat Tillman over to their deaths.

Rene Gonzalez is a UMass graduate student.

AN INSULT TO EVERY HONORABLE MAN/WOMAN WHO HAS DIED FOR THIS COUNTRY'S FREEDOM (which said freedom is obviously enjoyed by the original article writer).

If that guy has a problem with what our ideals and beliefs are, and what we choose to label this American citizen-then he should go back to where he came from.

This article infuriates me to no end.

This person is just a product of out culture.

Its not al Qaeda's fault they attacked us, it our fault.

Its not the bum's fault he's living on the street, its our fault.

Its not the murder's fault all those people are dead, its our fault.

Its not the pregnant women with 6 other kids by 6 other fathers in the welfare lines fault she's poor, its our fault.

Not suprising to see this type of liberal elitism coming out of UMass. Just surprised the president of the college has already come out and slammed it.

Pat Tillman did something that most of us didn't have the guts to do. I am sorry for his family and for our country that his life ended so early. I only hope the rest of al Qaeda that they "get what they deserve"

Just talked to a few of my buddies in the 101st Airborne who just read the article. They're wondering how long before this guy has to change his address, his phone number, and his name. Tillman and many others before and long after him have given their lives so this idiot can express his beliefs. Just hope he's not suprised when someone decides to protest his beliefs with their fists.

 The person who wrote the article is an idiot in my eyes.

FYI: Maybe I should have put this on the DB, but there is really no debate here, so it doesn't fit the guidelines, plus it's basically a community issue, and it's being hashed out on the national news so I figure it's fit for general consumption.

This conveys what I am thinking and feeling exactly.

::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes:: Then we'll see a Law and Order episode based on the story. I love the show but sometimes I have to

God bless Pat Tillman's soul. May his family and friends find comfort in knowing that he died a real hero. His story is a remarkable story of sacrifice. I oppose the war in Iraq, but there is no denying Pat Tillman and every other soldier who has died thus far are heros.

Rene Gonzalez is being roasted by the media here in Massachusetts.

I think the prevailing thoughts on all of this is;

Believe what you want about the administration--support them or don't.

But...to call a deceased member of our armed forces, who died in the line of battle, protecting Mr. Gonzalez's 'rights' to write such an article. I think the word I am searching for is reprehensible !!!!!

 Wow! I don't even know how to respond to that article.

1. I didn't know Pat Tillman, but I seriously doubt that he "wished" to die.
2. Pat Tillman knew the difference between a celluoid Rambo and the real thing. He went out of his way to avoid any publicity regarding his decision and his service, steadfastly turning down all requests for interviews, book and movie deals. Even when he and his brother won the Arthur Ashe Courage in Athletics award last year, they sent their youngest brother to pick up the award for them.
3. Pat Tillman would have been regarded an "idiot" in Mr. Gonzalez' village? Well, I suppose THAT is what makes Puerto Rico (a poor, poverty-stricken, third world island) different from the most generous country on earth.
4. Mr. Gonzalez switches from second person to first person constantly in his essay. Most of the time, he speaks very derisively of "Americans", but in the end, he switches to "we" not realizing the irrationality of war. Mr. Gonzalez should decide if he is an American or not.

Sad. That's all I can say about the author on this "G" rated site...

"stupidity of both the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars,"
And he's calling Tillman the idiot?! How is the Afghan war stupid?!
But that's beside the point. It doesn't matter who you are; if you have the guts to serve your country, you are a hero. Doesn't matter if you die or survive, you're a hero. This kid needs to go back where he came from.
God bless Tilman and his family. And let that kid get what he deserves.

Pat Tillman, and all others who have been killed in action (and those who so far remain safe or returned safely), died so that this individual has the luxury of writing this editorial. It is BECAUSE of individuals such as Specialist Tillman that our country continues to have freedoms such as freedom of speech. In a sense, we should embrace the writer of such a (okay, my view- STUPID) viewpoint because it reminds us of what great freedoms we all have.

Sometimes the greatest freedom is to make a complete and absolute idiot out of ourselves or to say something completely unfounded and inappropriate- we may suffer social consequences (like hearing millions of people laughing at us), but we need not fear execution or persecution. What an incredible luxury and what a great reminder that we have brave individuals who are willing to maintain that luxury for us. They brave those giant spiders (remember that picture!!! still bothering me), sand, awful conditions and the possibility of death all so I can say whatever I feel like saying.

God Bless those serving our country- and thank you for giving me the freedom to make a fool of myself. In many other parts of the country individuals who write "free" editorials are not humiliated- they are dead!

You put it so true Val. As much as I hate what this person wrote, it is a right we have as Americans to do so. I am not 100% certain that he is an Amrican citizen or just here on a student VISA, but it is still one our most sacred rights. I tear up everytime I read or hear about another one of our soldiers dying for us. Also cry when I read about the ones who make it home to a "welcome home" they so deserve. Lets not forget that we all have the right to disgree with opinions such as this writers, and lets use our disgust to rally ourselves to show our support for the brave men and women who are serving for us.

The fraternity of those who have served in one of the Battalions of the 75th Ranger Regiment is a small one, and word is already out all over various web sites. I'm sure the author will get to explain his writings, in person, to former members of the regiment who don't like seeing one of their Brothers slammed like this, be it Pat Tillman or a Ranger you have never even heard of.

Not many people would have made the decision he did - he was a real man and died a hero.
