Will be staying at AKL in June and would like to get a bottle or two of wine for the trip to have a glass on our balcony when enjoying the sunset, watching animals etc...
Does anyone know what kinds of wine they sell at the gift shop? I like a white wine (Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio)
Do they sell brands I would be familiar with? I also wouldn't mind trying a brand typical to Africa/South Africa
Not a wine snob at all, just curious.

Thanks in advance

I didn't check at AK, but the ultimate answer is "far more expensive than they'll be at a store".

I am definitely not a wine snob and got Berringer. 12.95 at contemporary. 4.97 T Walmart. Ouch.

(Still can't believe cousin dragged me to Walmart lol)

I would check the Mara! We found the prices to be better at the Mara (counter service at AKL) than the gift shop. The white wine is in the refrigerated section. They also have great red wine there too!

Also- you can ask the cashier for a wine opener- they let us borrow one that we just left in the room when we checked out. They have wine glasses too!

Best choices by far would be to head to Epcot to France or Germany pavilions where they have dedicated wine shops. If you are spending the day at Epcot they will send your wines to the front gate for pickup when you leave. Optionally you can have them sent to your hotel but not until the next day.

Another option is to use Garden Grocer or another grocery delivery service. If you need a few groceries including wine they are often very reasonably priced direct to your hotel.

While not wine "snobs", my DH and I also enjoy a nice glass of wine on the balcony, and have found no better place to do that than AKL! We enjoyed the Indaba and the Wolftrap wines. We like reds, but there were whites available also, that were in the gift shop. While not cheap, they were really nice wines for less than you'd pay for a glass of wine at one of the lounges. There's also something fun about buying an African wine that you may not be able to try at home.

I tried the Groote Post Riesling at Jiko in December and loved it! 3 glasses. does anyone know if it is available to purchase in the gift shop? Can i buy a bottle from Jiko and they will cork it for me after dinner? I know this is an older thread, but still relevant to my question. TIA

If you purchase a bottle of wine while dining at Jiko and do not finish it they will re-cork it and wrap it for you for travel back to your resort, if you are staying at the lodge they will allow you to just put the cork back in and take it with you like that. We just did this in January when we didn't finish our bottle of Z. They had a more limited selection of the South African wines in the AKL gift shop this time than years past, in my opinion, and we completely forgot to check The Mara to see if their selection of the South African wines was better.

I’m curious if this is only at Epcot? I tried to do this at Animal Kingdom (the park) a few years ago and was told they couldn’t send wine to my resort. The first CM I asked told me they couldn’t send it to the front of the park either, but as I was paying, I asked again, and that CM told me I could. :confused3

That is odd unless it was an opened bottle. There is a Fl law that prohibits possessing open alcohol beverages in your car. :confused3 Security told me I could not carry a cup of bass ale outside of the international gateway when we were going back to the YC.

Correct. Because the parks have one liquor license and the resorts another. You can't transport open containers between jurisdictions.

Be warned, they change the types of wine sold in the stores at AKL often. My friend and I stayed there in Oct and fell in love with a particular Malbec and went back a couple weeks ago to get more and the entire selection has changed.

That said, what they sell in the stores at AKL are S. African or similar regions.

Very odd. It was an unopened bottle I was buying at a shop. I was told by two different CMs I couldn’t have it sent to my resort (a Disney resort) and by the first CM that I couldn’t even have it sent to the front of the park. I was very glad I asked again as I was paying as I didn’t really want to carry around a bottle of wine all day! Strange, though, that both of them told me it couldn’t be sent to my resort. I’m going to ask again during our next trip. Maybe the rules have changed. This was a few years ago.

It was because it was an open container and I could have been driving or going on a bus from the resort area. All liquor licensees are issued by the Florida ABC board so they should have all been similar since food is sold at Epcot and the resorts.

I thought they sent it to the gift shops and you picked it up on your way out... unless that has changed. I know you can't carry it around. Irks me when you get conflicting answers from the CM's.

True but that's not how liquor licenses work
They are for specific locales. One doesn't cover the other. It shouldn't make any difference but legally it does.
This is why the parks won't deliver to the resort.
