Our first cruise is coming up in a couple weeks, and we were wondering what kind of carryon luggage/bags does everyone prefer bringing with them. Is it better to bring an airplane size carryon bag on wheels or maybe a backpack that you don't have to drag around? Just curious as to what everyone's preferences are until we can get in our stateroom. Thanks!

Wheeled luggage is a lot easier if you have anything heavy.

Definitely wheeled.

That is one thing I love about Celebrity - they allow you to go and drop off your luggage even before staterooms are open. You can't stay or hang out, but you don't have to lug bags all over the ship.

I've done that on DCL the last two sailings... Was I not supposed to?

Unless things have changed, nope. You're not supposed to go to the staterooms until they are open for everyone. The exception being B2B or concierge.

I'm pretty sure I was directed there by the one of the crew members in Fathoms. They told me I was welcome to drop my bag at the room before heading to lunch. We didn't go INSIDE the room, just left the bag by the door.

That's definitely new if they're allowing that. That said, if I'm not allowed to put it IN the cabin, I'll keep it with me.

I had a late-ish PAT, maybe staterooms were open to everyone at that point and I just didn't realize it.

Could be. I'm in no way denying it happened. I haven't been on DCL since July 2019 so things might have changed.

Cabins have usually been open 1:30 or 2 and the hallways are roped off until then.

If you are not planning on having your luggage dropped off/checked in with the porters, then wheels are the best and most efficient.

We always use a backpack.

If you bring a roller, I recommend the ones that lean onto two wheels rather than the spinners that roll on four wheels. The spinners are AWFUL on the gangway and the thick carpets in the hallways.

We're bringing both carry on with wheels(2) and backpack(2). No larger luggage, we haven't used check in luggage for many, many years.
